Mother Nature has plagued the NASCAR Cup Series this season. Sunday at Michigan International Speedway was no exception.
Rain showers that swept over the track late on Sunday afternoon halted the event on lap 75. After making attempts to dry the track, NASCAR officials made the decison to push the completion of the race to noon on Monday.
The start was initially delayed due to wet weather. The race went under the caution when showers returned near lap 73, and was halted moments later when the rain intensified.
Tyler Reddick was the leader when the race was halted, with Alex Bowman in second. Kyle Larson sits in third, followed by Martin Truex, Jr. in fourth, and Erik Jones in fifth.
Austin Cindric, Brad Keselowski, Austin Dillon, Bubba Wallace, and Denny Hamlin round out the top 10 under the red flag.
For the race to be official, it would have had to reach halfway (lap 100) or the end of the second race segment (lap 120).
It had already been an eventful race for several contenders. Kyle Busch saw his day go south with a spin into the outside wall on lap 16 ended his day. Dawsonville, Georgia’s Chase Elliott saw a promising day ended when a cut tire sent his Chevrolet into the wall on lap 36. His Hendrick Motorsports teammate, William Byron, saw his day come to an end after his crew was unable to repair his car after a spin.
Pole sitter Christopher Bell was racing for the lead on lap 64 when he spun into the outside wall, leaving his car with damage. He was still listed as being in 32nd when the red flag came out.
