Jimmy Owens and Ryan Gustin split a pair of World of Outlaws CASE Late Model Series features over the weekend at Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, Georgia.

Owens topped the bill at the 3/8-mile clay speedway on Friday night, wiht Gustin closing out the weekend with a win on Saturday night.

On Friday night, Jimmy Owens sprinted away from Dale McDowell in turn 2 of the feature’s opening lap.

Owens held the point, but behind him, Max Blair slowly reeled him in. On lap 20, Blair had closed to within a car length of the leader.

Blair chased Owens through lapped traffic for more than 15 laps, but a caution for Tyler Millwood on lap 35 allowed Owens to have a clean track ahead of him.

From there, Owens drove away to score the $10,000 prize and becoming the third driver to grab back-to-back wins this season.

“We had a lot of good cars behind us chasing us all night long, and we were able to hold them off,” Owens said.

Blair, the Rookie of the race, crossed the line second, with McDowell in third, Tanner English in fourth, and Chris Madden in fifth.

On Saturday night, Ryan Gustin bypassed Dale McDowell on the final lap to score his second series victory of the season.

McDowell seemed destined for a home state victory, dominating the first 35 laps of the 50-lap event. However, a caution with 13 laps left to set the stage for the epic finish.

The Chickamauga, Georgia driver drove away from Gustin on the restart, trying to continue his pace in the middle lane. Meanwhile, Gustin moved to the top and started reeling in the leader until the final lap.

Gustin swung swung to the inside of McDowell, hoping to carry enough momentum to take the lead.

Gustin then sliding his car in front of McDowell’s nose to take the veteran driver’s lane away.

From there, Gustin sprinted away from McDowell, holding on for his second $20,000 payday of 2022.

“I just kind of felt like I was creeping, creeping, and creeping up on (McDowell),” Gustin said. “We got a good run out of (turn) 4, and I just hope I didn’t make too much contact. I have to watch the video. That’s the last person I want to ever rough up.”

Gustin said his win meant a little more as he battled one of his childhood heroes for the checkered flag.

“(McDowell) was one of my heroes growing up, and he still is,” Gustin said. “To be able to outrun him down here, it definitely means a lot. It feels really, really good, man. Like I said, anytime you can beat Dale McDowell, he’s a legend. That’s all there is to it. Legendary, for sure.”

McDowell settled for second after leading 46 of the first 49 laps. Kyle Bronson, Chris Madden, and Dennis Erb, Jr. rounded out the top five.

World of Outlaws CASE Late Model Series kicks off a Southeast doubleheader on Friday, September 30, with the Mike Duvall Memorial at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, South Caroline. Then, the Series moves to Georgia’s Senoia Raceway in for the Billy Clanton Classic on Saturday, October 1.
