Doubleheader Sets Up AMS Thursday Thunder Finale

After doubleheader racing on Atlanta Motor Speedway’s ¼-mile on Thursday, the stage is set for the championship finale on July 30.

The Round 6 and 7 double features on the Thunder Ring was an opportunity for drivers to assert themselves in their championship battle. In The Associates Group Pro Division features, Caleb Heady did just that by doing what he’s done throughout the season – win races.

“It’s really cool to win here. This being my first time being at Atlanta Motor Speedway for a full season and to be 6 for 7 so far is really special,” said Heady, who won both features Thursday. Heady rides into championship night with a comfortable 42 point advantage over Jensen Jorgensen.

Blaze Crawford won the first Semi-Pro feature of the night, but contact while battling for the win on the final lap of the second feature cost him valuable positions and, more importantly, benefited Ashton Whitener, his closest competition in the championship battle. Crawford enters the final race just eight points ahead of Whitener, who enjoyed her first Semi-Pro victory Thursday.

Two of the top three contenders in the Outlaws division traded victories Thursday. Bailey North won the first feature after a spirited battle with Donovan Strauss, who went on to take the checkered flag in the second feature. North holds a 10 point advantage over Kelly Puckett heading into the final round. Strauss is third, just 12 points behind.

The pair of WJP Investments Young Lions features drastically shook up the championship standings in that title fight. While Gavin Graham and Colin Brown wheeled their way to their first victories of the season, Isaac Bevin – the point leader entering the night – had two disastrous races filled with pitfalls. As a result, Bevin went from leading the way to 24 points behind new point leader Michael Gannon. Mason Maggio is just 9 points behind in second.

Bill Plemons, Jr. continued his perfect season with a pair of victories in the Masters features, as did Tristan McKee in both Bandits features.
