Somebody forgot to tell 15-year-old Sammy Smith that he was running in a different class now.

The defending Pro Late Model champion at Florida’s New Smyrna Speedway dominated Friday night’s 35-lap Super Late Model event and earned the checkered flag for Kyle Busch Motorsports in his first-ever SLM start. The win came on night one of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna.

“It feels really good,” he said. “Just can’t thank these guys at KBM enough, they’ve been working hard these last few weeks to get these cars ready.”

He took the lead on a lap 4 restart and didn’t look back. He said he didn’t expect his first win in a SLM to come this quickly, but pointed to his experience at the 0.48-mile track as a big factor.

“I mean, not really,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of experience at this track, but pros and supers are a little different but not much.”

Derek Griffith finished in second, with Brad May in third, Anthony Sergi in fourth and Austin MacDonald in fifth.

Jett Noland, Justin Mondiek Jesse Love, Colin Garrett and Nat Calles-McDonald rounded out the top 10.

In other action, Earl Beckner won the 30-lap Sportsman feature, with Nicholas Naugle winning the 35-lap Pro Late Model feature, Travis Eddy scoring the win in the 35-lap Tour-Type Modified feature and Dustin Higdon taking the victory in the 20-lap Bomber feature.

Action continues on Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway with races in the Super Late Model, Modified, Pro Late Model, Sportsman and Mod Mini divisions.
