In what’s become a trend in the annual asphalt Super Late Model opener at Georgia’s Watermelon Capital Speedway, a late race skirmish set up a pair of home state speedsters to battle to the finish.

After a dust-up between leaders Bubba Pollard and Stephen Nasse, Corey Heim beat out Kyle Plott by inches in a photo finish to score the win in Saturday’s CRA SpeedFest 200 at the Cordele, Georgia speedplant.

The finish came in a two lap shootout between Heim and Plott, who both hail from Marietta, Georgia around the 3/8-mile asphalt raceway. The duo battled back and forth for the lead, with the winner decided by a 0.027 margin at the finish line.  It marks the first win in the ARCA/CRA Super Late Model event for the 17-year-old Heim.

The door swung open for Heim when two pre-race favorites – Pollard and Nasse – tangled with a handful of laps to go.

Pollard had moved to the point from Nasse with 13 laps remaining after the two made contact with Nasse as they battled for the lead. The two made contact in the next set of corners, sending Pollard spinning on the front stretch. Race officials sent Nasse to the rear of the field with Pollard due to the contact.

The two made contact again on the following restart, and both drivers headed for the pits, where race officials prevented any further actions.

Meanwhile, Heim beat out Plott for the victory and the $10,000 winner’s payday.

Dawson Fletcher of Canton, Georgia finished in third to make it an all Peach State podium.

Willie Allen followed in fourth, with Daniel Dye in fifth.

Monroe, Georgia’s Jake Garcia finished in sixth, with Jeff Fultz, Brandon Jones, Brian Campbell and Tyler Roahrig rounding out the top ten.

Earlier in the afternoon, Stephen Nasse beat out Willie Allen in a last lap due to win the 100-lap Pro Late Model feature. Steve Dorer finished in third, with Dawson Fletcher in fourth and Evan Shotko in fifth.

Ryan Rackley, Daniel Dye, Ryan Herbert, Billy VanMeter and Harold Crooms rounded out the top ten.
