Rico Abreu held off numerous challenges over the closing laps to score the win in Wednesday night’s Hard Rock Casino Tulsa preliminary night portion of the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals at Oklahoma’s Tulsa Expo Raceway.

Asked about winning his preliminary night for the fifth time, Rico replied, “It’s pretty impressive. I’ve always come here really prepared and my team has brought really prepared race cars, but it all starts with our heat race, getting through that and then getting through your qualifier.”

Trailing Brad Sweet early, the California drivers ran varying lines around the Tulsa Expo Raceway with Sweet low as Abreu stepped to the top. Working through early cautions, Sweet was able to hold the point, but as the neared the half-way point, Abreu bolted into the lead on lap 15 with a slide job off the second turn.

Following a lap 17 caution, the restart began a wild scramble for the runner-up spot while Abreu steadily pulled away. His advantage evaporated when the caution flew again on lap 21. That was followed by a red flag on lap 24 for a five-car pileup in turns one and two.

Back under green, Abreu held the point, while Blake Hahn and Sweet battled for position behind him. That came to a halt when the pair collided on lap 26 in turn four, sending Sweet spinning off the wall while Hahn was able to keep rolling.

On the restart, Colby Copeland was able to get a run on the leader, but Abreu fended him off, going on to win by a 1.104 second advantage.

Copeland held off Hahn by 0.141 seconds for the automatic transfer into Saturday A-Feature. Hahn settled for third, with Chase Johnson in fourth and Sammy Swindell in fifth.
