Fast Four Cylinders Return To AMS Friday Night Drags

For the first time in eight years the Pro Four class took the pit lane dragstrip during O’Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags.

Several eligible cars rolled into Atlanta Motor Speedway eager to show how fast the four-cylinder cars can go – and they can certainly go fast.

That’s because the rules for the Pro Fours basically boil down to just two parameters: you must have a four cylinder engine, and you must have four tires. Just about any other modifications are fair game.

“You swap a bigger four-cylinder motor into these things and then just make them as light as you possibly can,” Damon Waldrop said. Waldrop competed Friday night in his highly modified 1993 Honda Civic churning out 240 horsepower.

For competitors like Lee Brimer, the return of the Pro Fours couldn’t come at a better time.

“I’ve been building this car over the past year and I’ve finally finished it,” Brimer said of his 1996 Honda Civic EK Coupe. Having previously raced in the more regulated Metro by T-Mobile Tuner Division, Brimer was thrilled to be able to run in the faster class.

“This is a lot more fun,” Brimer said. “This division is a lot less restrictive and allows us to take our cars all the way up to their full potential.”

“It’s been great,” added Waldrop. “There’s been a good turnout and the crowd has loved it and has been cheering and yelling so I’m happy with how tonight’s gone.”

Brimer and Waldrop raced into the final round of the night, with Waldrop taking the victory in the Pro Four division.

Meanwhile in the South River Agency New Edge Division two racers locked in a tight battle for the season championship were eager to scoop up much needed points in Friday Night Drags’ penultimate night.

Championship leader Jacob Turner and James Walker both advanced to the final round, with Walker rocketing to the victory. With the win, Walker has closed to within one point of Turner for the division title with championship night just around the corner.

Atlanta Motor Speedway’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags concludes the 2019 season on championship night Friday, August 23. More information can be found at AtlantaMotorSpeedway.com.
