Perhaps the most under-the-radar driver in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East this season has been Spencer Davis.

With finishes of seventh, two fifths and a fourth, the Dawsonville, Georgia native has yet to finish outside the top 10 in 2019 and is doing it all with a new team in Rette Jones Racing.

Making the transition from Danny Watts Racing’s familiar No. 82 ride, Davis, a series winner at Dominion Raceway in Thornburg, Virginia in 2016, is still working through some growing pains with the RJR bunch. However, the results show that the 20-year-old’s transition has been relatively seamless.

“New Smyrna was sub par,” Davis said. “We were really good at Bristol, I feel like. Just a victim of circumstance with tires. Came to South Boston, finished the first race fourth. Was really good at the start of the second race. But coming into (Sunday) we had to rely on our notebook real heavy. We just missed it a little bit.”

If “sub par” and “(missing) it a little bit” are finishes of seventh and fifth, that should be a warning for the rest of the competition. Especially heading to Memphis International Raceway, where he led 53 laps from the pole in his first career start.

“Going into Memphis will be real good,” he said. “(Last year) we had the dominant car, led half the race before we had a mechanical issues with the battery that took us out. We have the notebook from last year from the team I ran and raced for, I think we should be really good going into there. Need to do a little better to beat the No. 21 and the No. 15.”

The fifth round of the K&N Pro Series East season at MIR will take place on Saturday, June 1.
