Sweet Scores ASCOC DIRTcar Nationals Win At Volusia

Brad Sweet swept under Daryn Pittman midway through the 30-lap main event on Thursday night then pulled away to win the Ollie’s Bargain Outlets All Star Circuit of Champions DIRTcar Nationals feature at Florida’s Volusia Speedway Park.

Pittman powered out front early, but Kasey Kahne Racing’s Sweet was able to make the low groove work to slip past Pittman, then weave through lapped traffic to win.

Logan Schuchart eventually ran down Pittman for second while NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Christopher Bell finished fourth. Tim Shaffer came home in fifth.

“We work really hard to try to get it to drive good, and drive through lapped traffic,” said Sweet. “I thought I did a pretty good job there. I got a little tight late and didn’t really know where to be on the race track. I felt like somebody was probably breathing down my throat, but you just never know. I just tried to drive as hard as I could the last few laps and I was happy to see the checkered.”

David Gravel, Tony Stewart, Paul McMahan, Donny Schatz and Shane Stewart rounded out the top ten.

In DIRTcar UMP Modifieds action, three time DIRTcar Nationals champion Nick Hoffman survived a wild 20-lap feature to pick up his first gator trophy of the 2019 event.

Hoffman faded as far as fifth before charging back to second, sliding past leader David Stremme with three to go and holding off rivals Stremme and Kyle Strickler to win.

Strickler was able to get by Stremme for second with one to go as Stremme settled for third. David Reutimann came home in fourth, with Lucas Lee in fifth.

R.C. Whitwell, Curt Spalding, Brian Ruhlman, Chase Collins and Matt Crafton rounded out the top ten.

The DIRTcar Nationals continues on Friday night, featuring the season opener for the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series, as well as action from the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds.
