Mike Marlar and Chase Junghans both score $10,000 paydays over the weekend in World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series action.

Marlar grabbed the win on Saturday night at Pennsylvania’s Port Royal Speedway, while Junghans was victorious on Sunday night at Eriez Speedway in Erie, Pennsylvania.

On Saturday night, Marlar held off Brandon Sheppard to the checkered flag to score the win at Port Royal Speedway in his first visit to the half-mile dirt track.

Marlar began the night with a blazing fast time trial lap of 17.544, won heat race number three and re-drew on the outside of row two. Within four laps of the drop of the green, the Winfield, Tennessee, native jumped to the lead and began pulling away from second-place driver Brandon Sheppard and the rest of the field.

Marlar led until just inside of ten laps remaining, when he approached the rear bumper of a slower car down the backstretch.

“Everything was going good until I came up on that lapped car,” Marlar said of the incident. “I thought he was going to go through the middle and he kind of slid up in front of me and it took the air off (of the car’s nose). This place is so big and high-speed that it nearly wrecked me.”

Marlar’s car suddenly broke loose and slid up the track into the outside retaining wall. The level of contact was nothing major, but he did lose a 1.5-second lead over Sheppard in the process.

Try as he might have, Sheppard just couldn’t make up the gap in time, despite a caution coming out with four laps to go.

Marlar said he actually sustained a bit of damage after the contact, bending the right-front portion of the bumper down, causing it to drag on the racing surface throughout the remainder of the race.
But he kept the car under control and parked it in Victory Lane for his fifth win of the 2018 season and seventh on the all-time wins list.

Sheppard finished in second, with Devin Moran in third, Jason Covert in fourth and Tyler Erb in fifth

Prior to Sunday night’s Outlaw invasion at Eriez Speedway, June 26, 2015 was the date of Chase Junghans’ last victory with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Models.

Junghans’ night was almost perfect across the event board, as he took the lead on lap 1 of the feature and never looked back, leading all but just one lap out of the 50 completed.

“I thought that first one was going to be hard to get – we kind of fell into that,” Junghans said. “The second one was way harder, so hopefully we have the monkey off our back and we can start clicking them off.”

A yellow flag with just ten laps remaining re-stacked the field, giving second-place running Sheppard a few final shots at the lead. But Junghans stuck to his line and prevailed.

Sheppard, Chris Madden, Marlar and Boom Briggs rounded out the top five.

The World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series returns to action on Friday, September 21 at Outlaw Speedway in Dundee, New York. That’s followed on Saturdya, September 22 by the Late Model Nationals Open at Pennsylvania’s Selinsgrove Speedway.
