Mosley Opens AMS Thursday Thunder With Masters Win

The 20th Anniversary Season of the Thunder Legends Series kicked off on a wet Thursday evening at Atlanta Motor Speedway, as more than 90 drivers competed in eight separate racing divisions in one of the toughest quarter-mile programs in the South.

Rolling off the grid first, Wade Brewer led the field to the green flag in the Plemons/Bestway Trailers Masters Division feature to kick off the 2017 season among a crowded field of 13 drivers.

After leading the first three laps, a series of cautions led to Mark Swan assuming the spot at the head of the field, where he remained for all of two laps until Thursday Thunder veteran and the 2016 Masters Division champion Scott Moseley caught-up and passed him with a move to the inside on the sixth lap.

Moseley would use good speed and crafty maneuvering through lapped traffic to lead each of the last 15 laps in dominating fashion, taking the checkered flag for the ninth straight race going back to last season and for the 12th time in the past 13 races, going all the way back to Week 7 of 2015.

Swan finished second, with Bill Plemons, Jr. in third, Wade Brewer in fourth and Robbie Woodall in fifth.

In other action, Hudson Halder recorded his first Thursday Thunder feature win in the Semi-Pro Division, as he led each of the last nine laps of a time-shortened race despite starting at the rear of the field.

Drew Dollar won the pole and stayed ahead of the pack for the first two laps, but Rafe Slate made a pass exiting turn 4 on the third lap to grab the lead, though he wouldn’t stay there for long.

Just two laps later, Halder completed his climb through the field, assuming the front position and held off the field through a long caution and several late-race challenges.
Brandon Brock finished second, with Slate third, Dollar in fourth and Cody Hall in fifth.

In a wild Plemons/Bestway Trailers Young Lions feature, Harrison Halder only led one lap, but it was the most important one, as he edged out Cale Hall at the line to secure his own first Thursday Thunder victory.

In the early stages of the race, it looked like Hunter Johnson was on his way to a sure victory after leading each of the first six laps with ease. Though he was showing good speed and hitting his marks, he would get tangled up with D.J. Canipe on the seventh lap, sending both to the rear, with Hall assuming the lead on the ensuing restart.

Hall was comfortably ahead for the next eight laps, but Halder staged a late-race rally and edged out Hall by less than a car-length as the caution and checkered flag came out on the time-shortened 15-lap feature.

Gracie Trotter, Carden Cochran and Johnson rounded out the top five.

In the Chargers Division, a consistently fast Trey Tadrzak led flag-to-flag for his first feature victory, while Ian Hampton finished in second.

The Outlaws Division feature was a tale of two drivers. Leading from the pole, Josh Hicks led the race through the first five laps, but a speedy Blaise Maddox buzzed passed him on the sixth lap and never looked back, cruising through the final 15 laps for a dominating Week 1 victory.

“It’s was great,” said Maddox in a post-race interview. “I can’t thank my dad and Rusty Clanton enough for making a fast car and a very consistent car. It’s been great all week, and it was perfect in the feature.

“(Hicks) was running a strong race, but he got loose coming out of turn 2 one time, and I just took advantage of it.”

Hicks finished second, with Nathan Jackson third, Hayden Swank fourth and Ashton Whitener fifth.

Max Hennebaul jumped out from his outside third-row starting position in the Ricky Sanders Racing, Inc. Bandits Division feature to snag the lead on the first lap, and he managed to keep the field at bay through six circuits before an accident sent him to the back of the pack early on in the race.

Restarting in the lead was Kenneth Henderson, and he made it count, staying out front for the duration of the race to secure his first Thursday Thunder victory.

Lucas Ruark finished in second, followed by Grant Thompson in third, Hennebaul in fourth and Wilder Etheredge in fifth.

It was all Ford Childers for much of the Wallace Electric Rookie Bandolero Division feature, as he led each of the first 13 laps in the 20-lap race. But trouble struck when he encountered lapped traffic on lap 14, as he fell behind with the race nearing its end.

With a good read on the traffic, Aprilia Holt skipped two spots and snagged a brief lead before a caution flag waved but would give up the top spot to Cole McKeehan on the ensuing restart.

McKeehan led the rest of the way to secure the victory in his Thursday Thunder debut, while Holt finished second and Childers recovered to finish third.

It was the Jensen Jorgensen show in the night’s Racing Radios Pro Division main event. After securing the fastest time in qualifying, Jorgensen was a class above the rest with a fast car that led each lap of the 25-lap feature, cruising to the checkered flag in his Pro-Division debut.

“It feels great,” said Jorgensen after the win. “We struggled a lot (in practice) yesterday, and we didn’t know what we had going into today. In qualifying, some people were saying ‘Oh, you were in the last session, that was a fluke to qualify on the pole.’ But I came out here and I walked the dog on them.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the performance. My dad – we threw the book at him a few times this week, and we got it where we wanted it, and it was fast. I’m ready for (the rest of) the season.”

Mathew Barnard finished second, with Bubba Harry in third, Corey Heim in fourth and Joshua Hicks in fifth.
