Brandon Overton and Dale McDowell wrapped up the Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals 2017 campaign by scoring wins in their home state of Georgia over the weekend.

Overton, of Evans, Georgia, went to victory lane at Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, Georgia on Friday night. Chickamauga, Georgia’s Dale McDowell went on to sweep the final two races at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, Georgia on Saturday and Rome Speedway in Rome, Georgia on Sunday night.

Overton, meanwhile, scored the series championship for the 2017 season.

The Peach State finale began on Friday night at Boyd’s Speedway. Overton took the lead on lap 22 of the 40 lap feature, and drove away to score his third series win of the season.

The victory also meant a $4,000 payday.

Shanon Buckingham would take the lead at the start of the feature, with Vic Hill, Dawsonville, Georgia’s Donald McIntosh, and Brandon Kinzer in hot pursuit. As Buckingham worked the high side of the race track, McIntosh would work around the bottom of the track and moved to third by lap four.

Buckingham would open a comfortable advantage and would begin to work slower traffic on lap ten, but a caution for a spin by Riley Hickman one lap later would give Buckingham clear track in front of him. The restart would see McIntosh work past Hill for second, while Overton began his charge to the front, as he worked past Hill for third on lap 14. As Buckingham and McIntosh battled for the lead, Overton worked the bottom of the track and began reeling in the lead duo as the race reached the halfway mark.

Overton would work past McIntosh for second on lap 21. One lap later, he took the race lead away from Buckingham. From there, he went on to score the victory, with McIntosh in second, Buckingham in third, Ricky Weiss in fourth and David Payne in fifth.

On Saturday night, the series moved to Dixie Speedway, where McDowell led all 50 laps en route to the $5,000 payday.

The initial start of the event would see the caution flag fly before all competitors completed the opening lap as Skip Arp would slow with mechanical issues in turn four. Once again got underway, McDowell took the lead, with McIntosh and Toccoa, Georgia’s Casey Roberts giving chase. Roberts would work past McIntosh for the runner-up slot on lap three as McDowell set a torrid pace out front.

Roberts night on lap 13 when he slowed with a flat right-rear tire, bringing out the caution. McDowell jumped back to the lead on the restart, with Jason Croft, Overton and Austin Horton in pursuit.

Three laps later, a three-car tangle involving Kenny Collins, Austin Kirkpatrick, and Robby Moses in turn two brought out another caution. The restart would see the final caution of the event wave when Jamie Oliver spun in turn two. The restart would see McDowell again motor away from the pack, while Overton would drive past McIntosh for the second position.

From there, McDowell went on to score the win, with Overton moving to second, McIntosh in third, Michael Page in fourth and Croft in fifth.

In local division action, Auston Smith scored the Steel Head/525 victory, Jeff Smith won in Crate Late Models, Alan Brewer won in Super Bombers, Dalton Polston won in Economy Bombers, and Kenny Clark won in Street Stingers.

The Spring Nationals Series moved on to its season finale at Rome Speedway on Sunday night, where McDowell would drive to his second consecutive win, taking home a $6,000 winner’s paycheck for his efforts.

McIntosh took the lead at the drop of the green flag to start the 50 lap feature, with McDowell, Derek Ellis, Overton, and Weiss in pursuit. Buster Goss would stop on the topside of turn four on lap three to bring out the caution.

Back under green, McIntosh would hold a comfortable lead, but saw his advantage evaporate when Buddy George rolled to a stop in turn three to bring out the second caution.

The restart again saw McIntosh hold the lead, with McDowell giving chase, while Overton would pressure Ellis for third. McIntosh would start working slower traffic on lap 20, allowing McDowell to cut into his lead.

As the race hit the halfway point, McDowell closed on McIntosh, and the duo began racing side-by-side for the lead on lap 30. One lap later, McDowell moved to the point and began building a lead over McIntosh. He would see that lead erased by a caution flag on lap 37 when Todd Murphy’s stopped in turn three.

On the restart, McDowell again moved to the lead, with Overton moving around McIntosh for second. As the laps wound down, the leaders found themselves racing in heavy lap traffic, allowing Overton to close on the leader. But McDowell was able to get to the checkered flag first to secure the win, with Overton, McIntosh, Weiss and Ellis rounding out the top five.

In local division action, Cass Fowler won in the Steel Head/525 feature, Ahnna Parkhurst won in Crate Late Models, Daniel Brewer won in Super Bombers, Matt Thompson won in Economy Bombers, and Kenny Clark won in Street Stingers.
