Donnie Wilson dominated Saturday night’s Southern Super Series asphalt Super Late Model race at Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, AL, but when all was said and done it was Kyle Grissom who climbed out of his car and celebrated in victory lane.

With the win, Grissom became the fifth different winner in five races for the series in 2016.

After engine failure relegated him to a backup car during Friday’s practice at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida, Wilson took the backup car to the top of the speed charts with a late practice mock qualifying run, and proved it was no fluke by setting fast-time during time trials.

Wilson started fifth after the redraw and worked his way to the lead before setting a torrid pace up front.

Grissom started sixth and wasted little time moving himself into second place, following Wilson by early leader Chris Davidson just 12 laps in.

A red flag halted the field on lap 16 when Nathan Davis’ car went off track in turn four. When the green came back out it stayed out the rest of the way.

After following in Wilson’s shadow for 66 laps, Grissom was able to capitalize when Wilson slipped up in turn one. Grissom took the lead and never looked back on his way to victory lane.

“I just tried to take care of my tires and luckily Donnie slipped up and I was able to capitalize,” Grissom said. “This place has been tough on me the last few years, I struggled to get a handle on it.

“It’s awesome coming down here and racing against these guys. These are the best in the business.”

Wilson hung on for second after his tires faded during the later stages of the race.

“We led a lot of laps. We just weren’t as good as Kyle,” stated Wilson. “After last night, I’ll take a second. It’s a good rebound.”

Riley Herbst finished in third. Herbst started 14th and worked his through the field during the long green flag run, rebounding from a disappointing 17th-place finish the previous night in Pensacola.
