For the second straight year, Donald McIntosh rang in the New Year with a trip to victory lane.
McIntosh, from Dawsonville, GA jumped to the lead on the opening lap of Friday’s Hangover 40 at 411 Motor Speedway in Seymour, TN and held off a stout 20 car dirt Late Model field to take the $4,000 win.
It marks McIntosh’s second consecutive New Year’s Day win in the event, after taking the win at the 3/8 mile banked dirt track to open 2015.
McIntosh was the second fastest man in qualifying, as veteran Ray Cook took the pole for the 40-lap feature with a lap at 13.858 mph.
When the green flag flew, McIntosh powered into the lead off turn two with Cook in chase. Jason Hiett closed on Cook for the runner up spot in the opening laps. The action was slowed for the first time on the day when Mack McCarter spun in turn one to bring out the caution.
On the restart, Cook retook the second spot with a power move off turn two, and used the high line to close the gap on McIntosh. Lap traffic would come into play, however, as Cook got caught up behind a slower car allowing McIntosh to get away.
While McIntosh stretched his lead out over the closing ten laps Cook would find himself under fire from Hiett. Hiett would finally make the pass for second, but could not catch the leader, as McIntosh went on to score the win. Hiett finished in second, with Cook in third, Riley Hickman in fourth and Tommy Bailey in fifth.
Dustin Linville, Joe Leavell, Cory Hedgecock, Stacy Boles and Jason Manley rounded out the top ten.
