NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing action returned to Lonesome Pine Raceway in Coeburn, VA on Saturday, as Adam Gray and Lance Gatlin each claimed victories in the night’s twin Late Model Stock Car features.

Kyle Barnes and Gatlin made up the front row for the first 35-lap Late Model Stock race. Gatlin would take the lead quickly over Barnes but the caution would wave shortly after on lap 2 for a spin in turns three and four. Gatlin would retake the lead over Barnes on the restart. The caution would wave again on lap 27 for a spin in turn two.

Gatlin and Barnes would battle hard on the restart. Gatlin would pull ahead of Barnes on the restart, but Barnes would tag the Gatlin in the left rear, sending him around. Both cars would be sent to the rear for being the cause of the caution, handing Gray the lead.

Gray would take over the lead on the restart and lead the remaining seven laps to claim his first victory of the season in his fourth start.

“It’s only the fourth weekend we’ve been here, so it feels really good to get a win that quickly with all the competition we’re against,” said Gray.

Gray gave much of the credit to the long hours by he and his crew preparing the No. 37 machine.

“We’ve been working hard all year just to get it ready and it finally came together. We’ll be tough to be the next couple weeks.”

Greg Bohannon, Jr. finished in second, with Jeff Woodward in third, Phil Harris in fourth and Wayne Hale in fifth.

Gray and Bohannon, Jr. were positioned on point for the second LMSC feature. But after two attempts to get green flag racing underway, Woodward and Harris were given a chance.

Woodward would take over the lead to start the race over Harris. Woodward would hold a comfortable lead until lap 7, when Harris and Gray would begin to charge for the position.

As the race neared the halfway point, Gatlin had made his way to the front of the pack and began to challenge Harris for third. Gatlin would take the position from Harris on lap 19 and begin to pull Woodward in. Using the bottom lane, Gatlin would take over first place real-estate on lap 20.

The first yellow flag would wave on lap 26 when Gray and Woodward got together exiting the fourth turn, sending Woodward around.

Gatlin would have no trouble taking the lead on the restart until the yellow flag was displayed again on lap 32 for a spin in turn three.

Gatlin again would pull away on the restart to record his third win of the season.

“(It) feels good to be back in victory lane,” said Gatlin. “We had the first race won until we got spun; started in the back the second race and picked our way to the front.”

Gatlin added that it was no easy task to make his way through the traffic.

“It was exciting and scary at the same time,” added Gatlin on his victory.

Harris, Bohannon, Jr., Gray and Michael Kidd rounded out the top five.

In other action, Keith Stiltner qualified on the pole position for the Modified Street feature. Stiltner would lead at halfway with Jared Broadbent and Elby Harrison making their way into second and third place respectively on lap 19. Broadbent and Harrison would attempt a late but it would not be enough as Stiltner would take the win.

Kevin Darnell qualified on the pole position and took the lead at the start of the Pure 4 feature. Contact between Jay Swecker and Jason Yates on lap 2 would force the caution out for the only time. Back under green flag conditions, Darnell would retake the lead and lead the remaining laps for his first win of the season.

Joshua Gobble powered to the lead to open the Mod 4 feature. Gobble dominated the race, leading every lap to take the victory over Rocky Yates and Kevin Canter.

Brad Ball took the lead from the pole position on the opening lap of the 20-lap Pure Street race. Ball would lead every lap for the win.

William Hale continued his winning ways Saturday, as he dominated the Rookie Pure 4 feature for his seventh victory of the season.

Racing continues at Lonesome Pine Raceway on Saturday, September 5. The second-to-last race of the season will feature all divisions in action. For more information, visit ThePineRaceway.com.
