Senoia Raceway opened last Saturday night with a record crowd as the 3/8 mile clay race track in Senoia, GA hosted its first event under the direction of Bill Massey, Mayes Massey and Doug Stevens. Seventy-two drivers competed in eight divisions including the Super Late Models for the first time in nearly three decades.

The results of the opening night were both good and bad. The good was the record crowd on hand, the renewed enthusiasm for all involved and the glimpses of what kind of racing is in store for this season. The bad was that the glimpses were short and spread apart due to a track that was crumbling in the corners creating a rough racing surface.

“The track was little rough,” said Super Late Model feature winner Clint Smith afterwards.

Those poor track conditions have prompted the trio of first year promoters to decide to cancel this Saturday’s (March 14) event to work on the track and insure that the problems are fixed before the drivers come back to race.

“I don’t want to run this track until I have it fixed,” said Doug Stevens, who is the key man in the track preparation. “These drivers put too much into their cars. I want the track to be right so they can race each other.”

Stevens spent the day on Tuesday talking to dirt track preparation experts to see how he can best fix the issue of the track breaking apart like last weekend. Gary Risch on Lernerville Speedway in Pennsylvania is nationally renowned for his preparation of dirt tracks and has advised Stevens on how to get the moisture that is stuck just below the racing surface dried before packing it tightly together for the racing surface to stay intact.

“It is going to take cutting the track open and letting it dry some before laying it back down and then packing it tightly,” said Risch. “The cold temperatures and continuous rains have not allowed the new clay to bond with the old racing surface. They need a break with the weather and some time.”

The weather forecast for the next few days is not favorable including a high percentage chance for rain this Saturday. Stevens and his crew will begin to work on the plan devised by himself after talking with Risch and a few others. That plan needs this week and then a dry next week to have it where Stevens thinks it will stay together and give the drivers the track he has envisioned since he and his partners decided to lease the track late last year.

“A lot of the drivers here last weekend said this track will be very racy once it is packed in,” added Stevens. “I want the glimpses we saw on Saturday to be all the time.”

With the plans to work on the race track the next ten days, Senoia Raceway has cancelled the weekly show planned for Saturday, March 14. The track will return to action on Saturday, March 21 with racing in all eight divisions including the Super Late Models, Limited Late Models, Crate Late Models, B Cadets, Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks, Bombers and Legends Cars.
