Ryan Preece dug himself a hole on the first night of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing, and a week later he completed his drive all the way back to the top.

The 24-year-old from Berlin, CT, captured the prestigious 30th Richie Evans Memorial 100 on Friday night at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, FL. The race is named after the Modified legend and NASCAR Hall of Famer from Rome, New York, who won six championships at the Florida half-mile high-banked oval.

“It’s something great,” Preece said. “This car is unreal, it’s made it so much fun to drive. To win this Richie Evans Memorial means a lot, it’s something I’ll remember throughout my career.”

The win also gave him the championship for the 49th running of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series track’s week-long World Series event.

“It’s awesome,” said Preece, the 2013 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion. “I’m sure we’ll be back with Eddie and Connie (Partridge) and the TS Haulers bunch next year, trying to do it again.”

Preece won four of the six races. But he entered the finale third in points because he was disqualified last Friday on opening night after crossing the finish line first.

Bonsignore began the night with a two-point lead over JR Bertuccio and four over Preece.

“I wasn’t even thinking about that deal,” Preece said. “I was just thinking about trying to win the damn race. We pulled it off, some I’m happy.”

Spencer Davis of Dawsonville, GA coasted out front until a caution on lap 65 brought everybody down pit road. Preece, who was seventh when the yellow flew, came out sixth and took just six laps to drive to the front. While Preece was out front, Bonsignore got up to third before fading in the closing laps.

Chuck Hossfeld finished second, followed by Eric Goodale, Bertuccio and Bonsignore.

It was enough to give the championship to Preece.

Said Partridge, who won the 2014 World Series with Ron Silk: “It’s great to come down here and bring a new car from Troyer. Essentially the whole week went according to plan. We had a lot of fun.

“Ryan Preece, what can I say about him? I’ve watched him win a few races in the No. 3 car when no one else could. I knew when he got in the 16 car he was going to be a real threat. We’re lucky to have him.”

Hossfeld finished second in points and Goodale, who won the John Blewett III Memorial 76 on Wednesday, finished third.

Harrison Burton, the 14-year-old son of former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Jeff Burton, became the first driver to win twice in the Super Late Model division.

Burton emerged from his second battle with Steve Wallace in three nights. Wallace, the son of NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace, won Wednesday’s 35-lap Super Late Model race, driving a dented and battered car to Victory Lane after Burton was penalized for aggressive driving when he turned Wallace around fighting for the lead.

Friday, though, Burton took his time and dispatched of Wallace to take the point with 10 laps to go.

“All those thoughts from the other night went away as soon as I passed him,” said Burton in Victory Lane.

Wallace settled for second, followed by Zane Smith, Christopher Bell and Thursday night winner David Garbo, Jr.

Paul Schafer, Jr., Garrett Jones, Drew Brannon, Denver Foran and Joey Mucciacciaro rounded out the top 10.

Smith holds a narrow three-point on Jones and a seven-point cushion on Wallace heading into the final night. The Super Late Models will cap the week with the second Bruce Gowland Memorial 100.

Austin Nason won the 35-lap Pro Late Model race Friday, with Derek Scott, Jr. in second, Dalton Armstrong in third, Sheldon Creed in fourth and Larry Gelinas in fifth.

Doug Moff won the 20-lap Florida Modified race. Tim Moore finished second, with Ricky Moxley in third, Kevyn Terry in fourth and Travis Eddy in fifth.

The 49th annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing wraps up Saturday night with the second annual Bruce Gowland Memorial Super Late Model 100, along with features for the Pro Late Models, IMCA Modifieds and Sportsman.
