COMMERCE, GA – A large contingent of racers made their way to Atlanta Dragway Sunday to compete in the annual National Dragster Challenge event, which awards an NHRA “Wally” trophy to the winner in each class.

Andrew Patterson enjoyed an incredible outing in both Super Pro Bike and Street ET Bike classes, taking the overall win in both and earning not one, but two National Dragster Challenge Wally trophies for his efforts.

Patterson, from Taylors, SC, was the class of the field in both Motorcycle classes, winning both his first and second National Dragster Challenge Wally within minutes of each other. Patterson races each class on different ’06 Suzukis. His Super Pro Motorcycle entry is bone stock, with no electronic boxes or wheelie bars, and even has the factory installed clutch. For the Super Pro Bike final, Patterson faced veteran racer Tim Sutton (’83 Suzuki – Clermont, GA). Sutton was on his game all day, but for the final his mount left the starting line 0.003 seconds before the timing system was activated, lighting up the dreaded tomato colored foul bulb. Sutton chose to run it on out, and carded a 5.69 at 111.43 mph (5.63 dial). Seeing the win and the Wally was already his, Patterson coasted to a 5.98 at 92.23 mph (5.65 target).

Patterson also won the Street ET Motorcycle Wally with another ’06 Suzuki, this time against Nick Young (’08 Kawasaki – Traveler’s Rest, SC). Patterson almost didn’t make it to the eliminations when the clutch failed during his Saturday runner up finish to Randy Barnett. However, as many bracket racers are known to do, Barnett immediately jumped in and supplied his spare clutch to Patterson, enabling him to compete on Sunday. Young’s machine hit the rev limiter mid pass, slowing him down some. Seeing that Young’s bike was off pace, Patterson chopped the throttle to the winning 5.85 at 102.52 mph (5.69 dial). Young crossed next with a 6.57 at 109.40 mph (6.10 dial). Brian Wilson (’01 Suzuki – Tallapoosa, GA) became Sunday’s semi-final finisher.

Two former Jr. Dragster graduates found themselves facing off against each other in the Super Pro final. Cole Sheriff of Lula, GA prevailed over Daulton Rogers from Hiwassee, GA with a two over 5.11 second pass at 130.91 mph (5.09 dial in time) in his ’06 Spitzer dragster. Rogers’ ’00 Undercover dragster crossed the finish line stripe 0.008 seconds later with a 5.42 at 126.28 mph (5.40 dial). Don Brown Jr. was taken out in the semi-final round by Sheriff.

Pro class winner Pete Wagner from Jefferson, GA and his ’71 Dodge Demon were both on their game in the final, and the dead-on 7.469 at 88.53 mph sealed the deal. Opponent Woody Bryant (’68 Camaro – Bowman, GA) did not leave any room for error, but his two thousandths breakout 6.858 at 99.30 mph (6.86 dial) earned the second place portion of the purse. Eric Lewis from Commerce, GA and Scott Chapman (’88 Mustang – Commerce, GA) ended their day in the semi-final round.

Ballground, GA racer Allen Long is no stranger to the winner’s circle, and added a third Wally to his collection with a victory in Sportsman over Nick Wagner . Long posted a great .01 over 11.06 at 64.09 mph (11.05 target) in a ’96 Silverado. Wagner did cross the big end stripe first, but broke out with an 8.37 at 74.63 mph on his 8.42 dial. Rickey Morris (’98 Trans Am – Ellenwood, GA) was the lone semi-finalist.

6-12 Jr Dragster winner Nate “Hot Rod” Halsey (11 years old – Clermont, GA) met Brent McKineely (11 – Griffin, GA) in the final, and got the instant win as soon as McKineely lit up the foul bulb with a too-quick start. Halsey still didn’t leave much room for McKineely, posting an 8.91 at 72.77 mph (8.90 dial). McKineely also broke out with an 8.87 at 73.83 mph (8.90 dial). Jacob Wilson (11 – Tallapoosa, GA) and Cannon Stiles (9 – Winder, GA) were the semi-finalists.

By the semi-final round in 13-17 Jr Dragster, all the racers were from McDonough, GA. Race winner Austin Carden (15 – McDonough, GA) already has a couple of championships under his belt, and added the 2014 Summit JDRL Challenge Wally to his collection with the win against Bailey Brown (17 – McDonough, GA). Carden’s time was 7.92 at 82.30 mph (7.90 dial). Brown’s heartbreaking -0.005 red light negated her otherwise good 7.96 at 82.95 mph (7.94 dial). Shelly Goodwin (14 – McDonough, GA) ended the day in the semi-final round.
