This one was a long time coming. Josh Weston had scored four straight second place finishes in the Hunter Sand and Gravel Pro Late Model division at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville in Nashville, TN dating back to October of last season. However, Saturday was finally the day for the Mount Juliet native as he picked up his first career Pro Late Model victory in the Big Machine Challenge Series.

Weston had to earn the win, coming from a 13th place starting spot. Josh methodically worked his way through the field, catching cautions just at the right time. He was able to get the lead away from Mark Day midway through the race after contact was made between the two. Weston held the lead until Willie Allen closed on him and got the lead for the first time of the night.

A caution for a wreck between Chase Chaffin and Chase Oliver would prove to be a game changer. After a lengthy delay to clean the track, Allen was forced to pull off the track. Complaining of the same problem that knocked him out of the Southern Super Series event on April 5 – a broken trailing arm bracket – Allen pulled the No. 26 machine behind the wall for repairs, ending his night with just 18 laps remaining.

This left Josh Weston and Mark Day to battle it out for the victory. Day got the lead on the restart, but wasn’t able to put any distance on Weston. Weston would eventually get back to Day’s bumper, sending him off into turn three with a shove. Josh quickly got under Day and leaned on his door entering turn one. Weston would finally complete the pass on Mark Day exiting turn four on the next lap.

That would be all that Josh Weston would need on this night. He was able to hold off Mark Day in the closing laps and pilot his No. 97 machine to victory lane for the first time in his career.

“I drove the dog out of that car,” Weston stated in victory lane. “I wasn’t going to settle for anything less than first. We’ve finished second four times in a row and I had had enough of it.”

“We really just weren’t good enough, said second place finisher Day. “We were a little bit tight through the center and free off the corners – we just didn’t have the car to win.”

Day went on to speak about the contact with Weston saying, “There was probably a little too much pushing and shoving going on out there, but it was for $5,000.” When asked if he could have done anything different to keep Weston behind him, Day stated, “Yeah I could have probably drove him as hard as he drove me, but Josh has always been a clean driver and you have to respect that.”
