Rookie Brady Boswell did about all he could have done to hold off Clay Rogers from picking up his 36th career X-1R Pro Cup Series win Saturday night at Hickory Motor Speedway in Hickory, NC. In the end Rogers, who all but clinched his fifth career series championship with the win, proved too much for the sixteen year old driver.

“I thought we had Clay (Rogers) beat, I really did,” said a smiling Boswell after finishing in second. “I knew he was going to be coming for me at the end so I did the best to save my tires to have something to race him with at the end. Evidently he had a little bit more left than I did. He raced me clean and we put on a show for all these fans here tonight and gave them what they came to see. I know we don’t get as many cars as some other series out there, but I can promise if you come race with us you’ll see that finishing second to a guy like Clay is a lot tougher than finishing second to a lot of other guys.”

Rogers picked up his second MAHLE Pole Award of the season, which gave him the chance to get out early and lead over the rest of the field. The veteran racer wasted no time opening a big lead over his fellow competitors over the first 125 laps of the race leaving the rest of the field to do battle amongst themselves.

J.P Morgan, the lone man within striking distance of Rogers in the championship standings, was on the move early after a dismal qualifying effort. Morgan made his way to the sixth position by lap twenty-seven after taking the green in twelfth. The complete opposite was happening to Gus Dean who slipped back to twelfth after starting fourth. While those two drivers switched which end of the ladder they raced on; a pair of part time competitors, Tyler Young and Coleman Pressley, showed their strength taking the competition yellow on lap 125 for fuel and tires in the second and third positions.

The competition break proved to be a tough break for some and lucky break for others. Pressley and Young both were put to the rear of the field for working on their machines past the allotted time, moving Boswell and series newcomer Lee Pulliam into podium positions. The track position for Boswell was all he needed to flex his muscles as he passed Rogers for the top spot on lap 146.

Boswell, with the comfort of a sizable lead, began clicking off laps on the scoreboard with hopes of getting his first career win. Boswell’s pace began catching up to the rear of the field on lap 214 as lap traffic began to tighten the battle with Rogers for the top position. Meanwhile Coleman Pressley made up the deficit from his previous penalty making his way into the third position in front on Pulliam on lap 216.

With sixteen laps to go the intensity picked up and the race was on between rookie Boswell and veteran Rogers. Lap after the lap the two battled side-by-side with Rogers to the outside and Boswell below with neither one giving an inch. Finally with just four laps to go Rogers finally showed what he had edging Boswell for the top spot, and holding on for his sixth win of the season.

“That was fun racing Brady (Boswell) like that for the win. Hats off to him and his team they keep learning and getting better every week. They’ll get one of these sooner than later,” explained a happy Rogers in victory lane. “This team is just on point every week. They give 100 percent every time we unload and it shows. I needed a run like tonight to feel comfortable about the points heading into Southern National and we got it. Now we can focus on going there and getting one more win before the season is over. A big thanks goes to USG Sheetrock, Lamb & Robinson, and Commonwealth Building Materials for their support this season.”

The finale for the 2013 season is up next for the X-1R Pro Cup Series on Saturday November 2 at Southern National Motorsport Park in Kenly, North Carolina. The event will crown the 2013 series champion and the Air Flow Research Rookie of the Year. For more information visit carsprocup.com.
