R.A. Brown had to work hard Friday night to score the victory in the Rupert Porter Memorial Shrine Race at Anderson Motor Speedway in Williamston, SC.

Brown had to hold off a hard charging Randy Porter on a series of late race restarts, including one that saw contact between the two allow Porter to lead briefly, to power his way to the victory in the Late Model Stock feature.

Brown started the night by putting up fast time in qualifying, but a roll of the dice meant he would roll of third, with Eric Stokes and Justin Sorrow leading the field to green for the 100 lap feature. Sorrow would power is way out front for the first three laps, but it was Stokes moving into the lead on lap 4. Meanwhile, Brown was stalking the leaders. He would move to second on lap 15, and begin working to close on the leader.

Randy Porter was also on the charge. He would begin battling Sorrow for third soon after Brown made the pass. On lap 17, a nerf from the front bumper of Porter sent Sorrow up the track in turn two, allowing Porter to sweep by for the positions.

The first caution of the night flew on lap 18 when defending event winner David Roberts saw his night end with a blown engine. Kenneth Headen would tag the wall after hitting oil from Roberts’ engine, sending him to the pits as well. Track officials put the field under a red flag to allow for clean up.

On the restart, Brown put on a power move on the outside to rocket past Stokes and into the lead, with Porter giving chase. The top three would run nose-to-tail over the next 10 laps until the second caution of the night flew on lap 43 for debris.

After the first of several false starts in the feature, the field went back to green on lap 50, with Brown leading Stokes and Porter. Behind the leaders, Sorrow was working to move himself back into the fight for the lead.

Porter went to work on Stokes for second, with the No. 32 making the move past on lap 64. Sorrow would follow to take the third positions.

With 20 laps to go, you could throw a blanket over the leaders. The fight was broken up when Zeke Whitman spun in turn two, drawing another caution.

Caution would fly again on lap 83 when Daniel Alvarez cut a tire and tagged the wall in turn two.

After another jumped restart, Brown swept back into the lead on the green flag, with Porter trying to find away around the leader. The caution flew again on lap 89 when Troy Carnes looped his car in turn four.

On the restart, Porter saw his opportunity, as he and Brown raced hard for the top spot. The leaders made contact, allowing Porter to slide past in turn three. He would hold the lead for only a lap before Brown powered his way back around on the outside to retake the top spot.

The caution flew again on lap 94 when Carnes tagged the wall in turn three.

After another jumped start led to officials warning Brown, the race resumed with Brown resuming the lead. He would stay there the rest of the way, as he scored the victory. Porter finished in second, with Sorrow in third, Stokes in fourth, and Dylan Hall rounding out the top five.

In other action, Beany Gillespie and Trevor Sanders led the BM Modified feature to green with Gillespie taking the early lead. He would stay there until lap three, when Austin Northcutt moved to the top spot, with Shon Gibson moving to second. One lap later, Gibson flexed his muscles, moving to the lead over Northcutt and Lance Jones. The caution flew on lap seven when Jones went around on the backstretch.

On the restart, Gibson moved back to the lead, but the race would be interrupted by caution again on lap later when Sanders spun in turn four. Gibson would retain the lead on the restart, with Casey Tucker moving past Northcutt for second. As the laps wound down, Tucker began stalking the leader, looking for a chance to strike. The leaders would go side by side on the final lap, with Gibson just edging Tucker at the line. Sanders would recover from his spin to finish in third, with Northcutt in fourth and Gillespie in fifth.

Riley Halverson jumped out to the early lead in the Legends feature, but saw that lead go away with a lap one caution after Kyle Hood spun in turn one. On the restart, Halverson battled side-by-side with Kevin Ellison before moving into the top spot. Andrew Brown would make his way past Ellison to move into second, while Rex Brown charged his way to third. Halverson would lead wire-to-wire to score the victory, with Andrew Brown in second, Rex Brown in third, Cory Parham in fourth, and Randy Gunton in fifth.

In Mini-Stocks action, B.J. Thrasher jumped out to the early lead, with Ryan Howard and David Darnell giving chase. The first caution of the feature flew on lap two when Josh Hughes spun in turn two. The caution would fly again one lap later when Brandon Segars spun in turn four off the front bumper of Jeff Turner. It would fly again when Shaun Mize spun in turn one.

On the restart, Darnell jumped to the outside, and powered his way around Thrasher for the top spot. The caution would fly again when Josh Roach spun on the backstretch. Back under green, Thrasher was all over Darnell, looking for a chance to retake the lead. He would get his chance on lap 10, as he retook the lead, with Darnell and Chad Campbell in pursuit.

It all went south for the leaders on lap 15, when Thrasher spun in fluid from Shawn McIntyre’s car, collecting Campbell and Howard in the process. That led to a red flag condition to allow for clean up.

Back under green, Darnell jumped out to the lead, and he would stay there to the end as he scored the victory. Josh Roach finished in second, with Campbell in third, Shaun Mize in fourth, and Mark Timmerman in fifth.

Jack Robertson took the early lead in the Evergreen Renegades feature, with Bryan Beckner in tow. But the early fight was broken up with a spin in turn four by Gary McJunkin. Back under green, Robertson continued to lead, with Becker in second and Steve Guthrie in third. As the lead duo jockeyed for position, Guthrie powered by both of them to claim the top spot, with Greg Darnell and Robin Darnell trying to follow.

The second caution of the race flew when two cars tangled on the front stretch, hooking Shawn Campbell and turning him hard into the inside wall, ending his night. The action continued on the restart, when Greg Darnell spun in turn four off of Beckner’s front bumper. Race officials sent both drivers to the back of the pack. From there, it was smooth sailing for Guthrie, as he scored the victory. Tommy Stokes, Blake Gregory, McJunkin and Beckner rounded out the top five.

In Super Renegades, Barry Tollison, Sr. jumped out to the early lead, but saw it all go away when he tangled with second place Rick Kelley in turn one, with Kelley’s car climbing into the air over Tollison, Sr. Both drivers were able to drive away.

That handed the top spot to Barry Tollison, Jr., with James Johnson in second and Sammy Staggs in third. Staggs would see his night come to an end with a hard crash in turn one, as he was sent hooked by Ricky Stephens. Staggs’ car would back into the wall, ending his race on lap five.

Tollison, Jr. would go on to barely hold off Johnson at the checkered flag for the victory. Tollison, Sr., and Kelley would recover to finish third and fourth, respectively, with David Whitaker in fifth.

B.J. Davis scored the victory in the Front Wheel Drive feature, with Brian King, J.B. Moser, Don Tavernia, and Joey Kelly rounding out the top five.
