Tonight’s Rupert Porter Memorial Shrine Race at Anderson Motor Speedway in Williamston, SC is one everyone will agree is special.

It is the one time per year everyone comes together to race it out for the children, Shriners Hospitals for Children. Shriners Hospitals for Children is a network of 22 non-profit hospitals across North America. Children with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients’ ability to pay. The closest Shriners Hospital for Childre, is the Greenville, SC location which is a 50 bed pediatric orthopaedic hospital.

Local Hejaz Shriners have worked hard all season planning for this special event, which has become a great fundraising effort for the hospital.

The event is also near and dear to the staff and racers at AMS, as it is titled for the former owner and operator of AMS, Mr. Rupert Porter, who lost his battle with leukemia in 2009 and was a member of the Hejaz Shriner for over 35 years.

The evening’s race card will feature seven divisions of stock car racing competition. Highlighting the evening will be the 100 lap Late Model Stock feature paying $2000 to the winner. Last year’s Shrine Race winner, David “Rocket” Roberts will return to recapture his title. Also returning will be R.A. Brown, who won the Shrine Race in 2011. Other local drivers expected include Randy Porter, Kenneth Headen, Justin Sorrow, Dylan Hall, Marty Ward, Austin Aker, Eric Stokes, Trace Reeves, Neil Meredith, Daniel Alvarez and more.
