Thomas Takes Southern Nationals Victory At Rome

William Thomas of Phenix City, AL drove a patient race and passed Vic Hill on lap 34 to take the final event of the Ray Cook Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals Series Sunday night at Rome Speedway in Rome, GA.

The event, originally schedule for the previous Sunday, had been rained out, and would see 28 of the original 31 drivers return for the race. Lloyd took the initial lead at the onset of the race but was soon passed by Hill. By midway, Thomas began to pull in Hill and soon made the pass around the outside for the top spot. Thomas went on to win, while Vic Hill followed by Lloyd who hung on for a third place finish. Jason Hiett finished in fourth while Dennis Franklin completed the top five.

Chris Fennell and Don Jenkins staged a side by side battle for the win in the Limited Late Model Division that would see Fennell take the win by inches over Jenkin. Jason Williams followed in third with Mike McConnell and Matt Dooley trailing in fourth and fifth.

Lee Sutton found himself in victory lane in the Crate Late Models. Maddie Crane followed in second holding off Justin Shipley in third. Hunter Jones croosed the line in fourth with Super Bomber regular Andy Morris in fifth.

Jackie Waites took the lead and survived a post race protest in the Economy Bombers class to get his first victory at the famed Speedway since 1999. Shane Smith followed on Waites rear bumper for second. Corey Wright followed in third with Dan Meadows making his way from dead last for fourth while David Burtz rounded out the top five.

Shannon Etheridge made the long drive from Monroe, GA and once again made his appearance in victory lane in the Pony Stock feature. Starting 18th in the 23 car field, Etheridge managed to avoid several cautions and worked his way up to first. Following to complete the top five were Brandon Knight, Robert Knight, David Kirkland, and Matt Thompson.

Mickey Dempsey used every lane on the race track and then some to grab the Cruiser victory over Corey Pressley. Pressley settled for second with Jimmy Wilson in third. Completing the top five were Anthony Pittman and John Sexton.
