Kenneth Headen moved to the front of the field in the Southeastern Super Truck Series feature Friday night at Anderson Motor Speedway in Williamston, SC, and would never look back, as he drove away to score the second event of the series’ 2013 season.

“It’s a team effort,” said Headen in victory lane. “I’ve got a bunch of good guys behind me that does all this stuff. (It’s) a first class ride, and I’m just enjoying the ride.”

Tim Lollis and Matt Leicht battled on the drop of the green, but that fight would come to an end early when Zach Franks and Ed Surrett tangled in turn two, with the truck of Davey Smart also becoming involved. Smart’s night would be over.

On the restart, Lollis and Leicht would again do battle at the front of the field, running side-by-side for several laps before Leicht took control, with Headen moving to second, and Lollis dropping to third.

A spin by Terry Seay in turn two would bring out another caution, and on the restart, Headen would charge to the lead on the outside, with Matt Leicht and Kevin Leicht giving chase.

Meanwhile, Marty Ward, who was forced to start at the back of the pack after arriving late to the track, was on the charge. By lap 19, Ward was in sixth, looking to challenge for fifth when the caution flew again for a spin by Scottie Thomas in turn two.

Headen would hold the lead on the restart, but over the next few laps, a four truck fight began to develop for second between Matt Leicht, Kevin Leicht, Martin Nesbitt, and Ward. The fight culminated with three wide racing going into the third turn, with Matt Leicht holding the position.

After a side-by-side fight, Kevin Leicht came away with second, with Nesbitt and Ward moving in behind him.

Nesbitt was the man on the move over the next several laps, as he battled with Kevin Leicht for the runner up spot. After running side-by-side for several laps, Nesbitt would move to second, and looked to track down Headen.

The caution would fly again on lap 38 when Ward’s truck slid way high in turn four, as his truck suffered a brake issue. He would be done for the night.

The yellow waved again before the race got back through the first lap back under green, when the trucks of Surrett and Chris Chastain tangled in turn two, with both trucks coming away with damage.

After the restart, Kevin Leicht and Nesbitt would change places, with Leicht holding the spot briefly before Nesbitt would move back to the lead.

Meanwhile, Lollis moved back into contention, and as the race neared the 50 lap mark, Nesbitt, and Kevin Leicht worked to hold Lollis behind them.

With 15 laps to go, Nesbitt began to close on Headen, and was drawing a bead on the No. 33 Chevrolet when the caution flew again for a spin on the front stretch by Zach Franks.

With a 10 lap shootout on tap for the end of the race, Headen jumped back out to the lead, with Nesbitt looking for daylight around him. One lap later, Nesbitt saw his chance for the win go away when he tangled with Lollis on the backstretch. Matt Leicht was also gathered up in the melee.

From there, it was clear sailing for Headen, as he would motor away for the victory. Kevin Leicht finished second, with Scott Franklin in third, Lollis in fourth, and Nesbitt in fifth.

In other action, Shon Gibson jumped out to the early lead in the BM Modified feature, with Casey Tucker in second and Kelsey Roberts giving chase. Meanwhile, Austin Northcutt, who started at the rear of the field, was on the charge, making up for lost time. On lap seven, Tucker would make the move to the lead, and would stay there for the rest of the 15 lap feature, which went caution free. Northcutt finished second, with Gibson in third, Alan Mitchell in fourth, and Bryce Malcolm in fifth.

William Plemmons would take the early lead in the Masters/Pro Legends feature, and would go on to lead every lap. The caution would fly on lap six, when Randy Gunton spun in the first turn. On the restart, Rex Brown would challenge for the lead, but couldn’t make the pass as Plemmons held the top spot. He would stay there through several more cautions, and would go on to pick up the victory. Trey Eidson finished in second, followed by Brady Boswell in third, Randy Gunton in fourth, and Brown in fifth.

In the Legends Semi-Pro/Young Lions feature, Joey Coen would move out front early, and would hold the lead throughout the feature. Kevin Ellison would bring both cautions in the event, both with spins. Late in the going, Josh Brimecombe would challenge for the lead, but it was Coen coming away with the victory. Connor Pyle finished second, with Brimecombe, Riley Thornton, and R.S. Senter rounding out the top five.

In Mini-Stocks action, David Darnell would jump out to the lead off the start, but would have to try again after Spanky Hicks spun in turn two, drawing a caution. Darnell would again get the advantage on the restart, only to see it go away again due to a spin by Aaron Calvert and Ben Kay in turn two.

Darnell would finally get to take and hold the lead on the next restart, with Chad Campbell moving to second, and B.J. Thrasher in third. Another spin by Hicks on lap six brought out another caution, and tightened up the fight for the lead. Darnell would hold the lead through two more cautions, but with two laps to go, Campbell finally got the run he needed, moving into the lead and moving away for his second win of 2013. Darnell held on for second, with Thrasher in third, Ryan Howard in fourth, and Calvert rebounding from that early spin to finish fifth.

The Renegade feature proved to be a battle of the Darnell’s with Robin Darnell moving into the lead for the opening laps before Greg Darnell took the lead. The two would battle side-by-side throughout the race, and on the last lap, Greg beat brother Robin to the finish line by a couple of feet to pick up the victory. Chad Watt came across in third, with Steve Guthrie in fourth, and Kyle Ballew in fifth.

The scariest moment of the night occured during the Front Wheel Drive feature, when Austin Heil gots turned on the frontstretch, and was nailed by an oncoming car. Several other cars were gathered up, with the red flag coming out to allow for clean up. Everybody walked away okay.

The race came down to the final turn on the final lap, with Joey Kelly leading Tommy Davis as the two moved into lap traffic. Contact between a lap car and Davis sent the lap car into Kelly. The contact cost Kelly his momentum, and allowed Davis to get by and cross under the checkered flag first. Kelly met Davis in victory lane, and voiced his displeasure with the move. Kelly then attempted to buy Davis’ winning ride by using the “buy rule” Anderson Motor Speedway has in the Front Wheel Drive division. Davis refused to sell, and gave up the win in the process. Kelly was awarded the victory, with B.J. Davis in second, J.J. Williams in third, Donovan Beacham in fourth, and C.J. Huitt in fifth.

The Late Models return to Anderson Motor Speedway on Friday, April 19, along with racing from the Mini-Stocks, BM Modifieds, Renegades, Super Renegades, and Front Wheel Drives. For more info, visit andersonmotorspeedway.com.
