Between rain delays, a wet race track, and the fastest car in the event crashing out of the lead, Saturday night’s All American 400 had more twists and turns than a Formula 1 road course.

Through it all, Ross Kenseth ended up the benefactor of the final rain shower that crossed the 5/8-mile Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, TN, as PASS South officials called the event at lap 220 of 400 with Kenseth out front.

After a rain delay at lap 194, that saw the field take multiple laps under caution to try to keep the track dry with NACAR Sprint Cup driver Kyle Busch out front, PASS officials, who had promoted the event as running 400 green flag laps, ran nine laps under green-yellow conditions to get the race past halfway, which would make it official should the skies open up.

PASS officials would restart the event on lap 204.  Two laps later, Busch appeared to ride high in turn three, apparently hitting a damp portion of the track, and sending his car spinning into the wall.  Busch was okay, but his night was over.

That handed the lead to Ross Kenseth.  Kenseth would hold off a hard charge from Senoia, GA racer Bubba Pollard through two more cautions.  When the rain returned on lap 220, it was just a matter of time before the race was called, with Pollard in second, D.J. Shaw in third, Johnny Clark in fourth, and Daniel Hemric in fifth.

It was a highly competitive race from the start, and Nate Caruth led early, followed by Willie Allen, Busch, fast qualifier Kyle Benjamin and Dillon Oliver.

Benjamin would see his night end on lap 67 when contact with the lap car of Rick Brown send Benjamin hard into the inside front stretch wall.  Benjamin was okay, but his night was done.

Several teams opted for pit stops, moving Hemric to the top spot, with Mason Mingus in second and Gary Gaulding in third.

That wouldn’t last long, as Mingus was turned by Gaulding on the front stretch.  Mingus slid down the track in front of the pack, but avoided making contact with any cars or with the wall.  He was able to continue.  Gaulding was black flagged and penalized for rough driving.

Kyle Busch would charge around Hemric for the lead on lap 77, with Johnny Clark and Allen moving behind him.

Caution flew again on lap 83 when Landon Cling tagged the wall, coming to rest in the middle of the track.

Busch would maintain the lead on the restart.  Meanwhile, Pollard and Kenseth were beginning to make their presence known behind the leaders, as the duo would break into the top five on lap 89.

Approaching the lap 100 mark, Clark made his move around Busch for the top spot, while Pollard moved to second, and looked to track down the leader.

The caution came out again on lap 102 when Gaulding blew a tire in turn one, sending him into the wall.  The leaders would hit pit road as teams varied pit strategies with rain on the way.

As the next 90 laps played out, the lead would change hands several times while Busch, Pollard, and Kenseth charged their way through the field.  Busch would regain the lead on a lap 188 restart, with Kenseth and Pollard behind him as the rain closed in, setting up the wild finish.
