Turlington Inherits UARA-STARS Victory At Anderson

Ronnie Bassett has made a habit this year of collecting trophies on the UARA-STARS late model circuit. But Friday night, he had to give the trophy back.

Bassett crossed the finish line first in the Toyota of Easley 150 at Anderson Motor Speedway Friday night after he grabbed the lead from Devin Jones in the closing laps and held off a charge from Scott Turlington in the final corner.

The victory was short-lived, however. UARA officials disqualified Bassett’s car for having illegal air ducts and an illegal engine position. Officials declared Turlington as the winner.

It looked like Bassett had scored his third UARA-STARS win in five races this season, that the veteran had used experience instead of horsepower to earn the victory.

“I rode around the middle of the track saving my tires for most the race,” he said in victory lane — prior to post-race inspection. “Then it came down to the end and it was time to go. I had enough car to keep it on the bottom of the track when it mattered.”

Turlington used a similar strategy to finish second on the track. He started on the pole and led the first 58 laps before pulling aside and handing the top spot to Sean Rayhall. He ultimately fell out of the top five before launching his comeback.

“Our tire strategy was to try to run a consistent lap time, and if anyone caught us, we were going to let them go,” Turlington said afterward. “I got all the way back to sixth and was getting nervous. It wasn’t until about the last 20 laps that the leaders really started losing their stuff bad.”
Rayhall and current Anderson Motor Speedway late model points leader Ralph Carnes were the first to fall. Rayhall and Carnes both used the high line early in the race to roar up through the field to take the top two spots. Carnes dove under Rayhall in turn 1 to take the lead on lap 74, but Rayhall grabbed the spot back on lap 106.By the next lap, Carnes was stuck in the outside groove and sinking outside the top five on his way to a 10th place finish.

Rayhall ultimately lost the lead to Jones on lap 121 after Jones punted the 17-year-old rookie in turn 3. After falling to sixth, he spun off the front bumper of Garrett Campbell’s car to bring out the final of four cautions on lap 143 and limped home 22nd out of the 27-car field.

The late caution set up a green-white-checkered finish. As Bassett broke away from the pack, Turlington pounced on Jones to take second as the two crossed under the white flag.

Turlington caught Bassett as the two leaders drove off turn 2 for the final time. In turn 3, Turlington gave Bassett a suggestive nudge, but Bassett held his line and the position.

“I probably could’ve raced Ronnie a little different there on that last lap, but you’ve got to hand it to him – he drove the perfect line,” Turlington said. “But that’s OK. We’ll get our win soon.”
