Corey Lajoie thought on Friday that he was going to win his third UARA Late Model race at Rockingham Speedway. But that was before he qualified 12th on Saturday morning.

Not that a poor qualifying effort could keep him out of victory lane.  Lajoie won the 75-lap race Saturday afternoon, the first of a three-race weekend at Rockingham Speedway, after grabbing the lead for the first time on a restart with two laps to go.

Lajoie drove away from Travis Swaim and Ronnie Bassett on the late-race restart and kept his record at Rockingham intact. Bassett edged Swaim for second, while Tim George and Jake Morris rounded out the top five.

“I knew that (Swaim) was having trouble on the restarts, and I had a real good one and was able to get away from the field,” Lajoie said. “All the stars lined up and the Good Lord gave us the victory.”

Swaim qualified on the pole and led several laps, which was a surprise to the young High Point, N.C., driver. His car blew its engine in practice on Friday, and his team had to borrow an engine just to make the race.

He didn’t get any laps on the motor until qualifying Saturday morning, he said.

Swaim’s misfortune was just one break Lajoie needed to get the win. He was riding in third when Clay Rogers, who had the lead, spun off turn 4 with four laps to go. Rogers continued but tangled with Will Gallaher on the final lap and finished 13th.

Rogers’ misfortune also gave Ronnie Bassett a shot at the win.  Bassett, who already has two wins this year, spun during qualifying and started the race last in the 27-car field.

“It was a blast driving up through the field,” Bassett said.

Bassett drove off into turn 1 on the penultimate lap on the inside of Swaim, while Lajoie flanked both of them to the outside. Lajoie prevailed and kept his Rockingham record perfect. He has three wins in three starts.

“I call it, ‘Three for Dale,’” he said.
