A.J. Maddox took advantage of a late race miscue by Matt Kurtz to score the opening night win for the Eagle Jet Top Gun Sprints as part of night two of the 39th annual Winternationals at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL Friday night.

Meanwhile, Nick Hoffman won on night two of Open Wheel Modified action, locking himself into Saturday night’s 75-lap A-Main on his first ever visit to East Bay Raceway Park.

In Top Gun Sprints action, Maddox took over the lead on lap seven when leader Matt Kurtz his the restart cone on the final restart. Maddox took the lead on lap seven and led until the final caution came out on lap 22 as Hayden Campbell spun in turn two.

On the final restart Maddox led the field to the green with Danny Martin, Jr. and Matt Kurtz crossing the line behind him. Kurtz tried to slide to the inside of Martin, Jr. but hit the cone and crossed the finish line first, but was penalized for hitting the cone.

“I hated to win that way” Maddox said in victory lane. “I was hoping Matt would win after losing his dad just a month ago.”

Rounding out the top five were Danny Martin, Jr., Matt Kurtz, David Steele and Mark Ruel, Jr.

It was a night of surprises in the Open Wheel Modified Division as Nick Hoffman towed in from Mooresville, NC to view the track for the first time and capture the winner’s share of the last preliminary race worth $1,500 Friday night.

Hoffman told the crowd that he felt like he was “in the mix” all night long even though he had never seen the track before, his Elite chassis adapted to the surface very well.

“In 16 nights of racing, this thing has nine wins but, I’ve been so busy building these cars, that there’s almost no time to go racing,” explained the happy winner. Despite having fuel pressure problems all night long, he confessed that once the track blew off and got slick, he was able to start on pole and lead all 25 laps, thanks in part to a re-draw for the top 10 qualified cars.

Hometown regular Bill Howard Apollo Beach, FL finished second, followed by Devin Gilpin in third place. Anthony Kinkade out of Zanesville, Ohio finished fourth while Devin Dixon was fifth.

Kevin Adams, Kyle Bronson, Austin Sanders, Buzzie Reutimann and Jason Gross rounded out the top 10.

The Modifieds accumulated points for the two preliminary nights and the top six will be subject to a re-draw for Saturday’s 75-lapper paying $5,000 to win, including Gilpin, Bronson, Adams, Kinkade, Dixon and Travis Varnadore.

Winternationals action continues on Saturday night featuring the Top Gun Sprints and Open Wheel Modifieds.
