Veal Victorious In Hartwell Combined Late Model Feature

For the past three weeks, race officials at Georgia’s Hartwell Speedway have run a combined feature race for the Limited Late Model and Crate Late Model divisions.

The first two weeks, the winner came behind the wheel of a more powerful Limited Late Model.

But this past Saturday night, it was a Crate Late Model driver using skill and daring to score the feature win.

Royston, Georgia’s Eric Veal powered out to the lead at the start of the feature, and held off a persistent Ashley Poole – who had won the combined feature the previous two weeks – to score the victory on the 3/8-mile clay raceway.

Poole was fastest in qualifying, while Veal timed in third quick. But a four car inversion put Poole in the fourth starting position, while Stephen Segars moved to the pole, with Veal alongside in second.

On the drop of the green flag, Veal moved to the lead ahead of Segars, while Poole found himself mired in traffic. While Veal clicked off laps as the leader, Poole worked his way up to the second position. As the 25-lap feature reached the halfway point, Poole began reeling in the leader.

Over the remaining laps, Poole would try time and again to find a way around Veal. Poole had the faster car, but Veal had the track position, using the outside line to keep up his momentum, fording Poole to try the slower low line. On more than one occasion, Poole tried to run a higher line, only to lose traction and fall back.

Try as he might, Poole could not find a path around the leader, and Veal held on to score the victory. Poole had to settle for second, followed by Chris Woods in third, Segars in fourth and Grant Jordan in fifth.

In other action, Alex Yarbrough held off Glenn Jackson to score the Hobby feature victory. Shane Yarbrough finished in third, with Daniel Doster fourth and Scott Slama in fifth.

The Modified Street feature got off to a bumpy start, when the transmission locked up in Daniel Doster’s car as he passed under the flagstand on the opening lap, gathering up Thomas Segars and Chad Hoopaugh in a crash in turn one that brought out the red flag. While Doster’s night was over, Segars and Hoopaugh were able to continue.

In the end, it was Chris Cape scoring the win after something broke on leader Michael McTier’s car. Segars recovered to finish in second, with Hoopaugh in third.

Shannon Duck took the victory in the Stock V8 feature, with Cord Crowe in second, Paul Moore in third, Seth Brown in fourth and Wilton Bailey in fifth.

Jeffery Lord was the winner in the Stock Four feature. Brent Couch, Dustin Bales, Pete Whitley and Jonathan Griffin rounded out the top five.

Randy Shaw scored the win in the Up Front feature, with Joel Powell, Sr. in second, Jason Richey in third, Travis Jamison in fourth and Andrew Smith in fifth.
