David McCoy made a major milestone in his racing career as he claimed his 400th career win this past weekend.

Actually, the Franklin, North Carolina driver’s 400th win came at nearby Lavonia Speedway on Friday night and he capped it off with No. 401 at Georgia’s Toccoa Raceway on Saturday night.

“Well, I would have thought that I would have gotten it at Toccoa,” McCoy said. “I run so well there. Sure didn’t expect to get the 400th at Lavonia, but that’s the way it worked out.”

McCoy had said previously that when he started racing in an old Ford Pinto way back when, no one would have thought that he would be the successful driver he has become.

“I couldn’t get out of everybody’s way fast enough,” he said. “I tore up a lot of cars trying to learn how to drive at the old Smoky Mountain Speedway in Cherokee, North Carolina.”

It didn’t take too long for the young driver to learn how to get to victory lane, and get there often.

While he’s driven for a number of different car owners, he has really hit the mark with his present car owners Steve ‘Hollywood’ Turner in the Limited Late Models and Paul and Cindy Campbell in the Pro Late Model car.

“We had a disappointing year last year,” said McCoy, “We only won 17 races.”

For most that would be a career season, but for a driver who has several 40-plus season victories, I guess 17 wins could be classified as disappointing.

Saturday night, McCoy took the win in the Midsouth Cage Equipment Limited Late Models. He won out over Toccoa natives Clayton Turner and Drew Benfield.

In the FASTRAK Pro Late Model feature it was Nick Schlager getting his first ever win. He was followed by David McCoy and Frankie Beard.

In the Safety Plus 602 Sportsman race, it was Rusty House winning his second feature in a row. Dustin Morris was second, followed by Brandon Stroud in third.

Billy Buffington took the Modified Street win for the second week in a row. He was trailed by Sterling Helm and Daniel Snow.

In the Toccoa Pro Trucks feature, Matthew Furgerson got his first win of the season. Sterling Helm and Spud Nicholson finished second and third.

Kevin Kelly won the Stock 4 main event. Bobby Rhinehart was second, with Randy Boshears in third.

Frankie Beard set sail in the Stock 8 feature but was dogged throughout the race by Hayden Collett. In the end, Beard scored the win, with Collett in second and Jack Hill in third.

Justin Sorrow topped the O’Rielly Auto Parts Front Wheel Drive division feature. Tony Stevens finished second, followed by North West finished in third.

Preston Kelly won the Kettle Construction Young Guns race. Caylan Kettle was second and Will Kettle finished third.

Toccoa Raceway is back in action this Saturday night for Autism Awareness Night at the track. For more information, visit ToccoaRaceway.com.
