Schatz Sweeps WoO Sprints, Three Injured At Volusia

Donny Schatz wrote another page of World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series history Sunday night, as he swept both features in a double-header as a part of the DIRTcar Nationals at Florida’s Volusia Speedway Park.

Schatz scored the win earlier in the day in an event delayed by rain from Saturday night. Later in the evening, he made his second trip to victory lane, becoming just the third driver in series history to win multiple series events in one day.

Jeff Swindell was the first to accomplish the feat in 1994 at New York’s Rolling Wheels Raceway Park. His brother, Sammy Swindell, pulled off the double at Bloomington Speedway in 1999.

“We didn’t change anything,” said Schatz after the second victory. “I thought the car felt really good. I actually thought I could get to the middle pretty well, but that changed once we got that going. These guys are incredible with what they do. I love it.”

Jason Johnson finished second in the first feature, with Chad Kemenah in third, Joey Saldana in fourth and David Gravel in fifth.

In the second feature, Gravel finished in second, with Daryn Pittman in third, Lucas Wolfe in fourth and Brian Brown in fifth.

Gravel’s consistency paid off as he scored the “Big Gator” trophy, which goes to the driver with the top performance overall in the series’ DIRTcar Nationals appearance.

In other racing action on Sunday, Nick Hoffman and Will Krup won the DIRTcar UMP Modified features.

The night was marred by a frightening accident in the second World of Outlaws feature.

According to a release from Volusia Speedway Park, the accident occurred when a car went through the fence in turn two, coming to rest in the pit area during the second feature.

Three people were injured, according to the release, and transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.

The Associated Press identified the driver as Dale Blaney, and said Blaney was uninjured in the accident.

According to a later speedway release, one of the three injured was identified as Kelly Kovski, crew chief for Justin Allgier Motorsports. The release stated that he is being treated at Halifax Health Medical Center and was last listed in stable condition, according to a statement issued by his family.

The track also identified a second injured person as Gary Streek of the United Kingdom, saying he was released from the hospital.

The third person was not been identified.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of our racing family injured Sunday night, and we are encouraged by the reports of the excellent care they are receiving at Halifax,” said Brian Carter, CEO of Volusia Speedway Park. “We have implemented additional safety measures and are very proud of our emergency medical personnel and their response to the incident.”
