David Payne became the 33rd different winner in Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Series history Tuesday night, as he drove into Victory Lane at Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, Georgia.
The Murphy, North Carolina driver led the entire way in the 35-lap feature to take home the $3,500 winner’s paycheck.
“We’ve sure run a lot of theses races over the years,” Payne said. “Ray (Cook) has done an exceptional job organizing these events, and the tracks have supported his efforts, and to finally win on under the Schaeffer’s Southern Nationals Banner is a really big deal for us.
“We’ve been close a few times, and to finally close the deal is a great feeling.”
Payne was fastest in qualifying, and brought the field to green from the pole position. He held off a mid-race challenge from Vic Hill, who was able to challenge side-by-side at one point. In the end, Payne moved away to take the win, while Hill finished in second.
Craig Vosbergen finished a series career best third, with Devin Gilpin in fourth and Todd Morrow in fifth.
Ricky Weiss, Chatsworth, Georgia’s, Derek Ellis, Dawsonville, Georgia’s Donald McIntosh and Chris Brown rounded out the top nine finishers.
NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Ty Dillon came out to compete in the event, piloting his mount home to a 10th place finish.
