NASCAR Xfinity Series racer Erik Jones turned a rare night off into a winning moment, as he scored the victory in Friday’s Circle City 100 for the ARCA/CRA Super Series at Lucas Oil Raceway in Brownsburg, IN.
Jones, the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour Champion, held off defending race winner John Hunter Nemechek for the lead in the middle of the race , and then held off Brian Campbell to make the trip to Victory Lane.
“This feels great to win at Lucas Oil Raceway,” Jones said. “I have to thank my whole crew, the car wasn’t great in yesterday’s open practice, but they worked on it today and made it right.”
Stephen Wallace brought the field down to green, but Nemechek wasted little time in working his way to the front, along with Jones. Nemechek got by Wallace on lap 34 to take the point, with Jones in two. Nemechek open up a sizeable lead, but saw that advantage disappear when a spinning car brought out the caution.
On the restart, Jones was able to power by to get the lead on lap 51. Nemechek gave chase, looking to make another challenge for the lead when he was forced to the pits on lap 68 after losing power from a dead battery. Jones would then hold off Campbell to get the win.
Campbell would finish in second, with Rapheal Lessard in third, Todd Gilliland in fourth and Grant Quinlan in fifth.
Stephen Wallace, Cody Coughlin, Wes Griffith, Jr., William Byron and Tanner Thorson rounded out the top ten.
