The second night of Week-6 doubleheader action in the Thursday Thunder Legends Racing Series presented by Papa John’s Pizza got underway at Atlanta Motor Speedway Thursday night.

Scott Moseley and Clay Thompson highlighted a record evening on the quarter-mile Thunder Ring, as one Thursday Thunder mark fell and another was matched, while two drivers picked up their first wins of the season.

Plemons Investments Masters

Before he picked up his sixth-straight win to break Skip Nichols’ single-season record for most consecutive victories in the Plemons Investments Masters Division, Scott Moseley trailed as far back as fourth place through the half of the feature.

Mark Swan won the pole and burst out of the gate to lead the first nine laps, but at the halfway point, Moseley moved into first place and stayed there for the rest of the way to finish off the win and rewrite the record books.

“I looked at it last year, and I think Skip (Nichols, all-time winningest Thursday Thunder driver) had five (wins), and I said, ‘It’d be cool to win five,’ so I went past that,” said Moseley. “And some of the guys and girls were saying, ‘Ease up a little bit and give one of us the win,’ and I said, ‘Look, with a streak going like this, there’s no easing up.’ I’m gonna ride this pony as long as she lets me ride.”

Despite being passed by Moseley at the race’s midpoint, Swan kept pace with him through the last half of the feature and finished second.

“Mark was good. He’s been good for the past number of weeks, and he was good last year,” said Moseley. “But if he would have hit his marks every lap, he would have been really hard to pass. But we went down in (turns) 1 and 2, and I saw him wiggle and I just gassed her up as hard as I could – almost too hard. But you get a little excited when you see that door opening.

“You bide your time and wait long enough, and most of the time, openings will come.”

Tina Johnson finished third, with Mike Kennedy in fourth and Wes Potter in fifth.

Bandits

With his eighth straight win to begin the season, Clay Thompson joined Joey Logano (2000) and Chandler Smith (2014) atop the Thursday Thunder record books with the most consecutive wins in a single season in any division.

“I’ve gotta thank God for this, and I want to thank all the fans who have been here every week supporting us,” said Thompson. “It’s just awesome. I was determined when I came in today that I was going to win it.”

Nathan Jackson won the pole and held the lead for all of one lap, but it didn’t take long for Thompson to find himself in what has become a very familiar running position this season. Thompson stole the lead away as the field crossed the finish line on the second lap. It was his show from there on out, as he led each of the remaining laps, taking the checkered flag and inking his name in the record books.

As to whether he thought he would win a ninth straight next week to move him into sole possession of the record, Thompson was nothing but optimistic – and rightly so.

“I hope so. It’d be awesome.”

Samantha Bart finished in second, with Bryson Ruff in third, Joshua Speas in fourth and Nathan Jackson in fifth.

Plemons Investments Young Lions

Brody Pope returned to victory lane for the fourth time in five races Thursday night in the Plemons Investments Young Lions Division feature. Pope had won three straight entering last night’s competition, but Connor Younginer broke up the streak with his second win of the season on Wednesday.

Pope started on the outside of the second row and worked his way north, surpassing pole-winner Hunter Johnson on the sixth lap. Johnson and Younginer battled back-and-forth for second place behind Pope, but neither had what it took to catch the leader.

Younginer took the runner-up finish, ahead of Harrison Halder, who posted his best performance of the season with a third-place finish. Sammy Smith finished in fourth, with Sam Mayer in fifth.

Atlanta Heart Associates Semi-Pro

In the Atlanta Heart Associates Semi-Pro Division feature, two-time winner Nolan Pope started on the pole and led the first three laps. The lead went away when Jensen Jorgensen made a crossover move for the pass rounding turn 2 and took the top spot on the fourth lap.

From there, Jorgensen kept a safe distance ahead of the field and locked up his fourth straight victory and fifth in the last six races.

With the win, Jorgensen qualifies for the national championship Semi-Pro Legends race taking place in Connecticut later this year.

“This is a big race. This is the regional qualifier that I needed this year. I lost it out in Texas, I lost it in Alabama, I lost it in South Carolina and I finally got it at my home track,” said Jorgensen. “Man, I’m happy. I needed that.”

Jorgensen has won two national championships in a Bandolero car and looks to continue his success with his first in a U.S. Legends car.

“I’m pretty good under pressure, so I’m excited. I got my regional out of the way, so I couldn’t be happier.”

Pope hung on to finish second, with Scott Joy in third, Amber Fleeman in fourth and Brandon Brock in fifth.

Live Oak Plantation Outlaws

In the Live Oak Plantation Outlaws Division feature, D.J. Canipe won for the second time in as many nights. Despite starting in the fourth position, Canipe drove to the front, taking the lead from Ricky Springer on the fifth lap, and led the rest of the way.

Connor Younginer, Springer, Trey Tadrzak and Gauntt Hudgins rounded out the top five.

Racing Radios Pro

Though Robbie Johnston only led one lap, it was the most important one. After a raucous Racing Radios Pro Division race that featured several cautions and a number of lengthy delays for fluid on the track, Johnston made the hard-fought trip to victory lane in the evening’s pro class main event.

Five different drivers led laps over the 25-lap feature, and after a late race caution, Johnston made the most of restarting near the front. As the field rounded turn 1 on the final lap, Johnston, William Martin and Corey Heim went three-wide, each with eyes on the checkered flag. Exiting turn 4, it was still anyone’s race, but Johnston nosed ahead at the line and picked up his first career Thursday Thunder win.

“I knew when we went into that last corner I was in a position to win it,” said Johnston. “When I saw my opportunity, I made my move. I just went with what would work.”

Johnston becomes the sixth different winner in eight Pro Division races this season. William Martin finished in second, with Corey Heim in third, Dylan Murry in fourth and Mike Weed in fifth.

Wallace Electric Rookie Bandolero

It was a tale of two halves in the Wallace Electric Rookie Bandolero Division feature race. Winning the pole, Ashton Whitener took the green flag and led the field through the first 12 laps. But a last-half surge by Keaton Hendrix propelled him into the lead, where he stayed for the final eight laps.

Hendrix sealed up his first win of the season, while Whitener finished second. Shelby Ruark came home in third, followed by Wil Griffis in fourth and Justin Campbell in fifth.

Chargers Division

D.J. Canipe led flag-to-flag to win his second straight Chargers Division feature to polish off the evening’s action. Andrew Dollar finished in second, with Audrie Ruark in third, Annabelle Mohwish in fourth and Brandon Collins in fifth.

The Thursday Thunder Legends Racing Series continues with the penultimate races of the 2016 season with Week 7 on Thursday, July 14.
