Shane Clanton made it two for two in the race honoring his late father, as he claimed the win in the second annual Billy Clanton Classic Saturday night at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA.

After working past Southern All-Star Series points leader Riley Hickman with ten laps to go, the Zebulon, Georgia speedster pulled away for the win.

“The cautions helped us tremendously. We had a good race car all night, but just messed up in qualifying,” said Clanton afterwards. “We just got a game plan together there to bide our time. The cautions fell at the right time.”

The main event of the night honored 2015 Georgia Racing Hall of Fame inductee Billy Clanton. The legendary competitor won many times at tracks across the southeast including at Senoia Raceway.

Hickman gained the edge over Mason Massey on the drop of the green for the 50-lap feature. Hickman built a strong lead while drivers battled behind. The first contender to emerge from the pack was Clint Smith, who snared the lead on lap 14. The lead was short lived as Hickman reclaimed the top spot one lap later. Smith’s tires went away after that as he faded through the middle part of the race.

Chase Junghans was the next driver to come from the pack. Junghans also used the top groove to reel in the leader Hickman. A pair of cautions slowed Junghans progress and cooled his tires, taking away some of the grip he was gaining on the high side of the track.

With 15 to go, Clanton began to flex his muscles. Clanton got past Heckenast, Jr. and Junghans before putting the pressure on Hickman.

At lap 39, Clanton worked the upper groove off of turn two. Hickman slid up the track a bit in turn three trying to cut off some Clanton’s momentum. Clanton swapped lanes, with the leader jumping down low across the stripe, getting underneath Hickman entering the first turn. It was the move that would gain him the victory as he wrestled away the lead out of the second turn and then never looked back.

Junghans finished in second, with Hickman in third. Richie Stevens came finished in fourth ahead of Heckenast, Jr. in fifth.

Stevens pulled triple duty on Saturday night, as he swept both features in the Crate Late Model division. After last weekend’s postponement of the Crate Late Model feature, Stevens was not sure he would be able to race this weekend in Georgia. He was able to work his schedule out led every lap of both main events. Dallas’ Mike Bruner was second in feature race number one while Winston’s Mark Page was the runner-up in the second race.

In the Mini-Stock feature, Mike Younginer snuck past Harold Leath after he bobbled a little in the first turn. Younginer never was challenged on his way to his first career victory.

Tim Harmon went flag to flag in the Bomber feature to claim his first win at Senoia raceway. Michael Couch finished in second, with and Carly Arnett in third.

In the B Cadet, Chuck Page held off all comers for the B Cadet victory. Ted Minnix, Dennis Lykins, Rogert Arnett and William Blair rounded out the top ten.

Clint Smith took the win in the Limited Late Model Feature, with Chris Fennell finishing in second, Glenn Morris in third, Jason Williams in fourth and Thomas Lewis in fifth.

The Hobby Stock feature fell victim to the curfew of midnight. Their feature race has been rescheduled for this Saturday, May 21. They will run the make-up feature and their regularly planned race.

Also on the race schedule for Saturday night are the Super Late Models, Limited Late Models, Crate Late Models, B Cadets, Bombers and Mini Stocks.
