You’re not the official race winner until your car passes post-race technical inspection. And unfortunately for defending track champion Kres VanDyke, his car has now been disqualified for two consecutive races.

VanDyke received the checkered flag as apparent First Kingsport Credit Union Late Model Stock Car winner at Kingsport Speedway in Kingsport, TN Friday night.

But following post-race technical inspection, VanDyke’s victory was overturned, thus moving Wayne Hale up one finishing position to capture his first win since recording two victories during the 2001 racing season. In all fairness to Hale, though, the track sat closed following the 2002 season until reopening for weekly racing in 2011.

In qualifying, current point leader Ronnie McCarty was overall fastest at 15.213 seconds in round one to earn $200, while VanDyke was quickest in round two.

Hale grabbed the lead at start of the 60-lap main event over VanDyke, Tyler Goodwin, Zeke Shell and Joey Trent. With Hale showing the way out front, behind him Shell was pressuring Goodwin for third before finally being able to get past him for the position.

As the race reached the halfway distance, Hale was led VanDyke and Shell in a very competitive race that saw the top 10 cars in the running order all on the same straightaway.

VanDyke was riding on Hale’s rear bumper and occasionally sticking his nose under the leader coming off the corners. Racing off the fourth turn on lap 32, VanDyke pulled alongside Hale and on opposite end of the track coming up off turn two, VanDyke surged ahead.

The last thing leader of a race wants to see is the caution flag wave, but that’s what happened on lap 48 when the yellow was unfurled due to debris on the track between turns one and two.

With the field tightened back up for a double-file restart, VanDyke and Hale were on the front row while Shell and Goodwin were side-by-side in the second row. Back under green, VanDyke moved back into the lead over Hale and Shell, while both Lee Tissot and McCarty were getting past Goodwin.

VanDyke began battling an issue with his brakes over the final 10 laps, which allowed Hale to race his way up beside to challenge the leader. After running door-to-door for five circuits, VanDyke moved back ahead with three laps remaining and held Hale off for the apparent win – only to be disqualified after failing post-race technical inspection.

Hale inherited the victory, followed by Tissot, Shell, McCarty and Goodwin.

Justin Fontaine, Austin Peters, Joey Trent, Derek Lane and Allen Hawkins rounded out the top ten.

In other action, John Harrell and Jared Broadbent battled side-by-side over the first eight laps of the Street Stock feature before Harrell powered into a lead he would never relinquish in capturing his division-leading 10 feature win. Harrell finished in second, with Broadbent third, Robbie Allison fourth and Paul Shull fifth.

After getting an apparent Pure 4 win taken away following post-race technical inspection last Friday, which also dropped him out of the points lead, Billy Ketron came back determined this week as he recorded his second victory of the season. He was chased to the checkered flag by Tim Abelseth in second, Jason Ketron in third, Billy Byington in fourth and John Ketron in fifth.

Kirby Gobble recorded his second straight and fourth overall Mod 4 victory this season in winning over Dennis Arnold, James Deese, Billy Duty and Jerry Miller.

Marty Tunnell rolled to his fourth Pure Street victory over Nasty Jones in second, Jeff Roark in third, Hershell Robinette in fourth and Dennis Deese in fifth.

Apparent Rookie Pure 4 winner Michael Nelson failed post-race technical inspection, thus handing the victory to Ben Barker, who was moved up a position to capture his second win of the season. Craig Phelps finished in second, with Dwayne Banks in third, William Hale in fourth and Chris Wilhelm in fifth.

Trey Lane captured his fourth Legend victory over John Bays, Les Ottinger, Alexcia Ray and Hannah Ottinger.

The next race at Kingsport Speedway will be on Friday, Aug. 14, featuring Late Model Stock Car, Street Stock, Pure 4, Mod 4, Pure Street, Rookie Pure 4 and Legend action.
