Shane Clanton has won some of the nation’s most renowned dirt Late Model events over the course of his 100-plus victory career, but one event will now emerge at the top of the list.

The Zebulon, GA speedster captured his father’s memorial event in front of a massive crowd dominating from start to finish. Clanton took home $4,025 capturing the Southern Nationals Bonus Series Billy Clanton Memorial at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA Saturday night.

“This has to be one of the most memorable wins,” stated a lively Clanton who was surrounded by friends and family in victory lane.

Clanton and Joe Armistead, Jr. brought the field to green for the start of the 40-lap event. A battle for the third spot between Clint Smith and Mark Whitener would heat up on the track during the opening laps.

On the 11th lap, the battle for second heated up between Armistead and Clint ‘Cat Daddy’ Smith. Armistead would hold the position after racing side by side for several laps.

Through the middle stages of the race, Mark Whitener took third from Smith and set his sights on Armistead while Austin Smith moved to fifth. Racing action was intense for several positions as teams knew of the fast approaching showers.

That rain finally arrived on the 34th lap during a late caution, forcing officials to make the decision to throw the checkered flag and officially end the race. Clanton would take the win after leading all thirty-four circuits. Armistead would end up in second ahead of Whitener in third, Clint Smith in fourth and Austin Smith in fifth.

The scariest moment of the evening took place at the beginning of the Bomber feature, leaving the crowd hushed. It occurred on lap six, when something broke on the car of leader Bobby Arnold, sending him hard into the backstretch wall. The impact caused Arnold’s fuel cell to crack open, resulting in a massive explosion and fire. Arnold was able to extricate himself from the burning race car and was transported to an Atlanta area hospital for treatment.

Paul Walters went on to score the feature victory, with Chris Arnett in second, Lee Owenby, Jr. in third, Winford Minix in fourth and Shane Tidwell in fifth.

In other action, Kenny Taylor was impressive in his first appearance in the B Cadet feature at Senoia. Taylor battled side by side with Parrish Duncan for several laps, using his momentum to keep Duncan in the second place position while others tried to catch the leaders.

Taylor allowed Parrish alongside of him again just past the halfway point, but never gave up the lead position to score the victory. Parrish would settle for second, with Jake Traylor, Blant Duke Roger Arnett rounding out the top five.

Ben Wells led the Hobby Stock field until a lap six restart found him surfing the dirt berm in turn two. That allowed Scott Sherrer to scoot past, along with Sam Carter. Carter would move past Sherrer, and went on to post his fourth win of the season. Sherrer would finish in second ahead of Tyler Brown in third. Chris Steele finished in fourth, followed by Ryan Ray in fifth.

The final four feature races for the night were rained out. The Limited Late Model, Crate Late Model, Legends  and Four Cylinder divisions will run double features on Saturday, July 11.
