Dale McDowell took the Super Late Model field at Rome Speedway by storm Sunday night.

First, the Chickamauga, GA speedster qualified on the pole at the Rome, GA raceway, then took the lead on the drop of the green flag. McDowell went on to lead every lap en route to the victory.

While McDowell held a comfortable lead, second place was very much in play, as Jason Hiett and Jason Croft swapped positions several times. As lapped traffic became a factor, Hiett took second for good midway through the race with positions shuffling at a rapid pace midway through the event. Ray Cook slowly made his way into the top five, and would go on to finish in third, followed closely by Ryan Gifford in fourth and Derek Ellis in fifth.

Jason Croft, Jake Knowles, Ronnie Johnson, Austin Smith and Dale Thurman rounded out the top ten.

The Steel Head Late Model feature would see Jeff Smith lead wire to wire for the win ahead of Austin Horton in second. Chris Fennell came home third ahead of Matt Dooley in fourth and Joey Armistead in fifth.

History was made at Rome Speedway in the Crate Late Model feature as Will Roland, of Jasper, GA, took his first ever win as well as becoming the youngest driver to ever win a feature at the famed raceway at the age of 13. Roland passed Shane Smith in the early stages of the race then held off challenges from T.J. Brittain to take the win. Smith held on for third trailed by Hunter Jones in fourth and Justin Shipley in fifth.

Daniel Brewer took advantage of a confused restart to take the lead in the Super Bomber feature when then leader Justin Begley didn’t go on the restart. With everyone in a scramble to avoid Begley’s slower car, Brewer went from fourth to first entering turn one and went on to score the win. Andy Morris finished in second, with Cass Fowler passing for third. Begley recovered to finish fourth followed by Terry Vollrath in fifth.

Tyler Williams took the initial lead in the Economy Bomber feature until he was passed on a restart by defending division champion Dan Meadows. Meadows looked to be heading for the win until lap 13, when Austin Smith, making his way from deep in the field, took over the lead. Smith would go on to take the win, with Meadows in second and Williams in third. Landon Bagby finished in fourth with Dalton Polston in fifth.

Jamie Cross scored his 11th Pony Stock feature win of the season Sunday night. Marty Clark finished in second, with Bo Jordan in third, Brannon Knight in fourth and David Kirkland in fifth.

John Sexton picked up the Cruiser Division feature win, with Edwin Scott, George Wilson, Randy Ledford and Anthony Pittman rounding out the top five.

Rome Speedway returns to action on July 26, as the raceway plays host to the Southern Nationals Super Late Model Series, plus a full racing program. For more info, visit DixieSpeedway.com.
