Hunter Robbins took his first steps towards his first possible win in the famed Snowball Derby by scoring the pole during Friday night’s time trials at 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, FL.

The Montgomery, AL speedster toured the famed half mile with a lap at 16.212 seconds in his No. 18 Super Late Model. It’s the first Snowball pole for Robbins, who scored the Pro Late Model Snowflake 100 victory back in 2005.

Johann Long, the 2010 Snowball Derby winner, turned in the second fastest lap with a 16.228. John Hunter Nemechek was third fastest with a 16.232, with two-time Snowball winner Augie Grill fourth with a 16.239 and Forsyth, GA’s Scotty Ellis fifth with a 16.262.

Ross Kenseth (16.264), Derrick Griffin (16.272), Daniel Hemric (16.274), Mike Garvey (16.291) and two time and defending winner Erik Jones (16.292) rounded out the top ten.

Other notable qualifiers include Dawsonville, GA’s Chase Elliott in 12th, Senoia, GA’s Bubba Pollard in 15th, Acworth, GA’s T.J. Reaid in 16th, Donnie Wilson in 17th, Preston Peltier in 19th, Williston, VT’s Brian Hoar in 21st and Corey LaJoie in 23rd.

Of the 62 drivers that took time Friday night, only the top 30 are locked into Sunday’s Snowball Derby. Four drivers will race their way in through Saturday night’s last chance race, with three provisionals to be added to make up the 37 starters for Sunday’s race.

Among those on the outside looking in are Suwanee, GA’s Anderson Bowen, Canton, GA’s Dwayne Buggay, Austin Theriault, Harrison Burdon, Johnny VanDoorn, Dawsonville, GA’s Spencer Davis, Kyle Plott, Mason Mingus, Jerry Artuso, Will Gallaher and Chris Fontaine.

Action continues Saturday with the last chance races for both the Snowball Derby and the Snowflake 100, with the top four finishers in each transferring to their respective features. The local Pro Truck division will also be in action before the Pro Late Models take center stage for the Snowflake 100.

That all leads up to Sunday, and the 300 lap Super Late Model Snowball Derby feature.
