NASHVILLE, TN – Willie Allen survived two red flag periods and a carnage of wrecked race cars in winning the Hunter’s Sand and Gravel Pro Late Model 100 lap feature event on Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville in Nashville, TN on Saturday night.

The weather was chilly but the racing was fast and furious as a large 40 car starting field took the green flag in what would prove to be a long and costly night for several teams. It’s been over two decades since the historic fairgrounds track has seen that many cars contest a late model feature on the 5/8’s mile high banked track.

The race was stopped by two huge accidents and slowed numerous times before a final three lap shootout determined the outcome. Only eleven cars of the original starters were running at the end.

Allen started on the outside pole while former four time track champion Sterling Marlin led the 40 cars to the green flag. It only took three laps before the first caution would slow the race for a wreck involving Michael Bolden.

The race resumed and Allen showed he had a dominate car but track championship contender Cole Williams soon let the former NASCAR Truck Series standout know that it would not be a runaway race.

The race’s first red flag came out on lap 23 with a major five car crash on the backstretch completely blocking the track. Hunter Spivey, Davey Coble, Bobby Knox, Jr. and Justin South were directly involved. Most of the remaining field received some sort of minor damage and the pits were active with crew making repairs once the caution resumed the race.

Allen and Williams would swap the lead while avoiding several more race slow downs. Williams was leading Mark Day, Allen, Suwanee, GA’s Anderson Bowen and Andy Johnson at the half way point.

Three time feature winner Josh Weston was taken out in a lap 80 crash involving eight other cars.

Pole sitter Marlin’s night ended up against the outside wall of turn 3. He was able to walk away from his damaged race car in what looked at first to be serious. He was battling in the top five when he out tangled up and first hit the inside wall, spun around several times and then struck the outside wall. The wreck brought out the red flag and also put Bennie Hamlett out of the race.

Mark Day looked to have had the track title locked up while running fourth until he spun out with help from Dennis Reno and ended up hard into the first turn wall. Day’s car rolled off the banking, leaking fluid from the rear of the car and was unable the restart, ending his title hopes. Reno was penalized and sent to the rear of the field.

That wreck caused a green-white-checkered finish and Allen has able to hold off a very strong effort by Williams to take the checkered. Bowen finished in third, with Dillon Oliver in fourth and Trey Craig in fifth.

Tucker Wingo, Chris Whorton, T.W. Fisher, Cole Rouse and Joe Ross rounded out the top ten.
