Doug Horton Wins Late Model Feature At East Bay

Doug Horton jumped out front on the drop of the green flag, and powered away to score the Late Model victory Saturday night at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL.

Jimmy Waldrop and Horton brought the field to green for the 25 lap feature, with Horton jumping out front on the start. The first caution flew when John Norris lost a left front fender, with Horton almost running over it.

On the restart, Horton would continue to hold the lead until lap 11, when rookie Megan Meyer slowed, bringing out the second caution of the night.

The red flag would come out on lap 21 as Jack Nosbisch, Jr. and David Pollen, Jr. got together, sending Nosbisch, Jr. rolling over as the two made contact. Nosbisch, Jr. was okay but the car was not able to continue on.

Horton would continue to lead the remainder of the race, picking up his second feature win of the season. Josh Peacock finished second, with Bryan Bernhardt in third, Phillip Cobb in fourth and David Schmauss in fifth.

In other action, the Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Street Stocks opend the night, with Billy Barstow and David Barwick II making up the front row. On the drop of the green, Barstow jumped out to the lead. He would pace the field for the first six laps until Tim Gay, who had charged from the 12th starting spot, powered by to take the lead.

The caution flew on lap seven when Chris Graebner slowed with mechanical issues. Back under green, Gay would lead until the final caution of the night flew with two laps to go when Kenny Eberly spun in turn two.

Gay would then go on to lead the final laps and pick up his second feature win of the year. Billy Barstow came home in second, with Thomas Burnside in third, David Barwick II in fourth and Buck Woodhouse in fifth.

Next up were the Florida Old Time Modifieds with Charlie “Fireball” Mixson and Tom McDonald starting on the front row. McDonald took the green flag and led the first two laps until David Kelly powered into the lead on lap six. One lap later, Dan Darnell took over the lead and led the rest of the caution free race to score the win. Kelly, Roger Herbach, Tom McDonald and Bob Fink rounded out the top five.

The Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds were next with Roger Crouse and Austin Sanders making up the front row for the feature. When the green waved Crouse quickly jumped out into the lead and would hold the point until lap three as Jerry Bruce and Kenny Monahan both spun in turn two, drawing the cautoin. On lap six Bregenzer stopped in turn four bringing out the next caution. The final caution came out on lap eight when James Decker spun on the back stretch into the water barrier. Crouse would continue to lead and go on to score the win. Devin Dixon finished in second, with Austin Sanders in third, Buzzie Reutimann in fourth and Dale Kelley in fifth.

The Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers closed out the night, with Gary Lucas and Brett Calonge making up the front row for the feature. Lucas jumped out to the early lead, but saw the caution fly on lap one when Calonge leaked fluids on the track, ending his night. Patrick Fiore, Sr. took the lead on lap five, but saw the second caution of the night fly on lap 11 when Jimmy Williams lost a right rear tire.

Back under green, Fiore, Sr. and Richard Humfeld raced side by side at the line with Fiore moving back to the lead. Coming to lap 14 Fiore, Sr. went high and Humfeld went low with John Moore splitting the two and going on to win back to back features. Humfeld finished second, with Fiore, Sr. in third, Stephen Morris in fourth and Dalton Goldhammer in fifth.
