Doug Horton powered to the lead on lap eight of the 25 lap Late Model feature Saturday night at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL, and would go on to score the victory at the famed “Clay By The Bay.”

Horton and defending division champion Dave Schmauss made up the front row for the feature. When the green flag waved, it was Schmauss leading the first eight laps until Horton took over the top spot. By lap 13, Horton found himself catching lapped traffic while trying to hold off Schmauss. But Schmauss had his own battles to worry about, as Jack Nosbisch, Jr moved past for second on lap 14. Meanwhile, Horton drove away to score the win in the caution free feature. Nosbisch, Jr. finished in second, with Schmauss in third, Bryan Bernhardt in fourth and Doug Watson in fifth.

In other action, the first feature of the night belonged to the Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Street Stocks. David Barwick, II and Tim Gay made up the front row for the 15 lap feature. When the green flag waved it was Gay leading the way until the first caution flew when Roberto Morfin, Sr. found himself spinning. Several more cautions would come out but no one was able to catch Gay as he went on to win the feature. Billy Barstow came home in second, with Buck Woodhouse in third, Barwick, II in fourth and William Burnside in fifth.

Next up were the Limited Late Models. Jesse Brown and Randy Shields would make up the front row. Trouble broke out on the drop of the green when Shields spun in front of the field in turn one, collecting Curtis Book. Book was unable to continue as Shields was able to drive away. On the restart, Brown moved into the lead. But on the next lap, Jason Dyal spun in turn four, drawing the caution again. Back under green, Brown held the lead until lap 11 when Roger Crouse powered by for the lead. He would go on to cross under the checkered flag first. But after tech Crouse was dq’d for having a beadlock on the right rear, handing Brown the win. Forrest Gough, Dale Pope, Dyal and Stephen Hohlbaugh rounded out the top five.

The V8 Warriors were next with Mike Wilson and Henry Wiley starting on the front row. The caution came out on the first lap when Nicholas Nyder took a wild ride in turn three that saw him nearly going over onto his lid. On the restart, it was Mike Wilson showing the way until the next caution came out on lap four when Doug Morris slowed on the track. Back under green, Wilson had to battle teammate George Gorham, Jr. lap after lap for the top spot. Coming to the checkered flag, Gorham and Wilson were side by side as they raced out of turn four. At the line, it was Gorham, Jr. picking up the win by just inches over Wilson. Gorham, Jr. said it was his first time racing on dirt after racing on asphalt for years. Mike Wilson finished second, with Raymond Vann third, Jimmy Baker fourth and Tim Stoffel in fifth.

The final event of the night belonged to the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers. Richard Humfeld and Chris Morris made up the front row. Trouble broke out on the first lap as five cars tangled on the backstretch, drawing the caution. When the green waved on the restart it was Wayne Kissam leading the way. The caution came out again as Frank Italiano collided with Devon Smith as Smith was attempting to pull off the track. Both driver’s nights were over.

Back under green, Kissam worked to hold off defending division champ John Moore. Moore would trail Kissam until lap 12, when he surged past for the lead. Moore would go on to score the victory, with Kissam in second, Jimmy Williams in third, Robert Gullet, Sr. in fourth and Aaron Yahnke in fifth.

ASA racing continues next weekend with the Late Models, Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds, Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Street Stocks, Outlaw Four’s and the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers. For further information, visit eastbayracewaypark.com.
