While the Super Late Models had center stage Wednesday night in the World Crown at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, GA, it was one of the preliminary events that night that caused many of the fans in attendance to cheer the loudest.

Former World Crown winner Russell Fleeman hadn’t been to victory lane in two years, but he showed he still knows the way, as he topped the field in the Outlaw Late Model feature to score the win.

Along with being his first win in two years, it was the first win for the former track champion since the passing of his father, Larry Fleeman, earlier this year.

“This one’s for him,” said an emotional Fleeman in victory lane.

On the start, Jason Bates jumped out front, with Mike Davidson moving to second and Fleeman charging to third.

Fleeman wasted no time in making his move, as he powered by Davidson in the third turn to move into second.

The caution flew on lap five when Trey White’s machine slowed on the backstretch.

The leaders went three wide on the restart, with Fleeman charging out front, Davidson moving to second and Bates relegated to third.  One lap later, Bates would move up to second, but there was no catching Fleeman.  The Dacula, GA racer set sail, and would win by just over a three second margin.

“I heard my spotter say we were three-wide, and I knew I had to bury it down in the corner,” said Fleeman.  “And it worked.”
