Kyle Busch Holds Off Bubba Pollard For SpeedFest Win

Kyle Busch had to hold off some of the top short track talent in the country to do it, but Sunday afternoon he scored his career third SpeedFest Super Late Model victory at Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, GA.

He had to keep a hard charging Bubba Pollard at bay to record the win.

“It’s awesome to come down to the south to see a full grandstand,” said Busch in victory lane.  “Thanks to you all for coming out to see us race.”

Busch previously scored wins in the event in 2009 and 2010, when it was held at Lanier National Speedway in Braselton, Georgia.

While many may have thought the NASCAR Sprint Cup star’s victory was a foregone conclusion, Busch had to fight hard against a tough field of competitors to take home his third SpeedFest trophy.

The SLM feature would see Pollard jump out to an early lead from the start, leading John Hunter Nemechek, Busch, Erik Jones, and David Ragan.  Busch would charge to the front, looking time and again for daylight around Pollard.

The first caution flew just 10 laps in, as Ross Kenseth’s Ford spun in turn three.  He didn’t hit anything, and was able to drive  away.

Pollard would retake the lead on the restart, holding off a hard charging Busch.  The action would be slowed again by caution on lap 23, when Erik Darnell and Donnie Wilson spun off the second turn.

Busch would finally get a strong look at the inside of Pollard on the restart, but couldn’t  make the move, as the Senoia, GA driver went back out front, with Busch settling in second and Nemechek moving to third.  Nemechek would pass Busch on the outside for second, and set sail after Pollard at lap 40.

Just a few laps, and one caution later, Nemechek would find himself leading the merry chase, with Pollard to second and Busch riding third.

The field was slowed again by caution on lap 58, when the cars of Kenzie Ruston, Kenseth and Jeff Fultz tangled in turn one.  Darnell also caught a piece of the action, causing front end damage to his car.

Nemechek would hold the lead on the restart, with Erik Jones moving to second, and Pollard falling into line third.  Pollard would surrender that position to Busch around lap 78, while Casey Smith moved to fifth, Stephen Nasse to sixth, Chase Elliott to seventh and Ragan to eighth.

A blown engine by Eric Jones on lap 96 in the third turn send Busch, Wilson, Jeff Fultz and others slipping all over the track.  Fultz would end up leaving the track, and landing in a ditch while several others spun to avoid the mess.

Nemechek would retain the lead, with Busch recovering to pick up second, Smith third, Pollard fourth and Elliott fifth.

The caution would mark the halfway break, with several cars heading to the pits for adjustments. Elliott would come out of the break with the lead, but Busch would push his racer out front to take the top spot on the restart.

Busch would continue to hold the top spot, with Pollard, Ragan and Smith charging behind him. Elliott would drop back to fifth.

With 60 laps to go, Pollard was on the charge, looking to catch Busch.  A restart with 50 laps opened the door for Pollard, but Busch would again slip away, while Pollard and Smith battled for second.

Smith would lose that battle, opening the door for Ragan to look for position around Pollard.

Pollard would hold the measure on the Unadilla, GA driver, but the field would be slowed twice by yellow flags between laps 160 and 166, giving the leaders another chance at each other.

On the restart, Pollard would make a bold move on the outside, powering his way to the top spot with just over 25 laps to go.

With 15 to go, Busch caught Pollard, and the two began dicing for the top spot.  Busch would win the battle, coming away with the lead.  Pollard would close back up on the Sprint Cup regular as the race approached 10 to go, and looked for an opportunity.

The opportunity seemed to slip away with a wiggle from Pollard, which allowed Busch to build a small lead.  Busch made the most of the slip, and pulled away over the closing laps.  He would streak across the finish line as the winner.  Pollard would run second, with Ragan, Smith and Nasse rounding out the top five.

Earlier in the day, Chase Elliott held off fellow Georgian Mike Garvey for the victory in the 150 lap Pro Late Model feature. Elliott had to thread his way through a two-car pile-up on the final lap, but came away with the victory.

“I don’t know if it was our strongest or not, but it worked out and we got to the front,” said Elliott in victory lane after the 150 lap grind.

Bubba Pollard started on the pole, and would take the early lead.  Trouble broke out early behind him, however, when Dwayne Buggay spun in turn one, collecting up Brady Boswell, Kyle Benjamin, Brandon Jones and Anderson Bowen on the second lap.

On the restart, Pollard would again retake the lead, but Elliott was on the move, charging around Daniel Hemric for the second position.  As the race approached the 30 lap mark, Elliott began to close on Pollard while Garvey moved to third after doing battle with Kyle Plott.

As the race hit the 50 lap mark, Pollard, Elliott and Garvey ran nose to tail when a spin in turn three brought out the yellow flag.

On the restart, Garvey and Elliott fought for second while Pollard tried to move away with the top spot.  Pollard would hold the point to the halfway mark at lap 75, with Garvey second, Elliott third, Brent Downey in fourth and Hemric fifth.

Garvey would take the top spot soon after the halfway point, with Pollard fighting with Elliott for second.  Elliott would take the runner-up spot on a restart just after the 100-lap mark, and give chase to Garvey.  Meanwhile, Plott and Pollard would slug it out for the third position. As Plott took third, Elliott and Garvey would go side by side for the lead.  The Elliott would come away with the lead with just over 25-laps to go.

The red flag would come out on lap 128, when Buggay and Boswell crashed in the fourth turn.  Buggay had a brief fire break out, but it was soon extinguished.  No one was injured, but officials threw the red flag to allow for clean up.

Elliott would retake the lead on the restart, but the field was slowed again with about 10-laps to go for a pile-up in the first turn involving Roger Adkins, Shane Sawyer and Kyle Bryant.

Elliott was able to make his way through the last lap melee to score the win. Garvey finished second, with Hemric third, Pollard fourth and Plott fifth.
